    Carlisle and the tax man

Just got back from Carlisle and had a great time. It was great to see old friends again and some new ones as well. One of the best things is to get to put faces with the names of posters of this board. I have a question for any of you who take vendor spaces. All winter I had been told that I MUST have a PA sales tax license and heard all the horror stories of folks who don't have one who get thrown out of the show. So, like a good little boy, I got my sales tax license and filed 2 quarterly reports over the winter. Of course I never saw a PA tax agent. Did any of you have the privilege of having an agent ask for your license? It's not really a big deal but now I have to give PA its cut of my sales. Just asking.

They stopped by my spot a few years ago on a Friday. They don't care if you go just once a year with some old parts from your basement or run a huge business. I have my PA tax number hanging in my tent every year and file 2x a year regardless if I sell something or not.

          Jeff,

PA Tax people will hound you to death if you don't at least file the tax reports. If you owe them anything, just go ahead and pay the tax.
All the horror stories have been confirmed and PA is serious about collecting the tax.
It doesn't matter that you probably deposited more money in the banks via of Carlisle Productions, Motel Rooms, Restaurants and Filling Stations than you made but they will have their tax money from that $35.00 sale.

besides the outragous price of $15 to get in and the door keeper snickering at my son when he asked if there was a military discount. i see why i was able to get through the place in 6 hours. many empty vendor spots and many fewer customers.i admit i am addicted to the place and will never stop attending. but taxing people on stuff left over from a past restoration is just killing the goose. on the other hand my son and i only managed to spend $ 2100

This is nothing new, the last time I was a vendor, 1993, they were there and Casear was demanding his due. It started sometime before that, I think I filed a return for two-three years before that. NC started doing the same thing several years ago.

I would move the show to a state that is more accommodating, I'am sure there are lot's of city's that would love the revenue . pack your bags and lets go!

I was at a country Farm Fair in Erie early this year, and there were two agents hitting ALL of the sellers for their tax ID's.

Funny story about PA and taxes. I grew up in PA and moved when I turned 18. I have not worked or lived their for 35 years. For 20 of those 35 years they called and hounded me for taxes I did not owe. Finally convinced them I had not lived or worked there after 20 years.

Try living in MD with rain taxes and flush taxes. PA is looking better and better

No better here in CT, we get taxed on everything. Buy a car pay sales tax, then pay tax on it every year you own it. Go to McD's get taxed, we probably have the highest gas prices because we have the highest gas tax, yet there is never any money to run the state.

I wonder if they bothered the guys managing the "Tips For Toilets" program. I spent (tipped) a dollar per visit all of Friday and most of Saturday until I saw an older Gentleman coming around with a zippered cash bag collecting all the paper money. I thought I was helping out some enterprising young fellows, but that made me a little unsure. I asked the older man to change a $20. so I could make it through the day (chuckle chuckle). He opened up his cash bag which was stuffed full of money and counted it out. Made me wish I was a little younger myself in the days of better bladder control.

i was always under the impression that the people who ran the rest areas were responcible for the rental, cleaning and stocking of the facilities. if not i guess i will save a few dollars next year. i wonder if they charge the kids who haul parts to your car a franchise fee.

Man I'm glad I live in Texas. Texas good - taxes bad.

I love Texas too, want to live there before I die. This thread has run its course, and was never technical anyway.
Time to pull the plug on it before I am told to get out of dodge!
