C2 Center Console - restore or replace?

The center console in my 1966 is scratched and has pitting. It probably isn't original to the car because I had to drill hole to install the seat belt retainer. It does fit well though.

I've been looking for an NOS one, but only find used or reproductions. From my research on the TDB, the reproductions don't fit.

Is there anyone out there who has had yours rechromed? If so, who did the chroming and how did it turn out?

Also, is there any easy way to tell if what I have now is a reproduction?

    Thanks,

    Don

Don, I see no one has replied so I will throw my two cents in. I do not think repro's will have part numbers on the underside like the originals. I have also heard that repro's fit terribly but don't know for sure as I am fortunate enough to have 2 originals in my 2 cars. I have an NOS in my closet that does have the part numbers on it, as well as the correct rivet (not screw) holding the ash tray cover slide on. I don't think rechroming is capable of being done on the console's, but I may be wrong. If there is, I have a feeling it will be only one guy out there who does it and it will be (I am guessing) quite expensive. NOS's are out there. Used originals are out there too. I masked and painted my original in my maroon car and it came out wonderful. You will go through anywhere between 5-7 beers just to mask the darn thing off....but the results are worth it. This is presupposing you find a used/original console with nice chrome. Good luck. I would be happy to shoot you some pics of my restoration process of my console for reference...Cheers. ARA

I actually did repaint the one in my car and it turned out very good. My issue now it that there are lots of scratches and some pitting in the unpaired areas.

Thanks, that help a lot to know that you have been successful with replating

I had mine replanted several years ago by Lemon Grove in California. They are out of business, wish they were still in business. Having your own parts reach rechromed may cost more, but at least you know what you know it fits.

              Don,
send me a PM and I will tell you about my 67 original console I had re-plated last year but didn't use in favor of an NOS one.

Don, I had my 67 console restored by "Corvette Clocks by Roger". A previous owner had drilled 2 holes through the chrome on the side to hang a cup holder. Corvette Clocks filled the holes and re-chromed, and painted it. Looks great, cannot tell where the holes were. I am very satisfied with it.
