The speed cup in the speedometer head probably needs to be replaced. No big deal as any speedometer shop can do this in 30 minutes or less. I would also remove the speedometer cable, clean and lube (very little)! If it's broken (speedometer cable) just replace the broken cable inside the sheath.
If there is no time to do this, take it to the meet and take the hit for the pegged speedo pointer!
Then later have the speedometer repaired. There is nothing going to be done by anyone to destroy the originality of your Corvette.
