    69 L36 287 Coil

    Should a 287 coil for a '69 L36 have the "B-R" under the "287" or not?

If it does have a B-R there is one on eBay right now.

According to Bizzoco, 1994, pg 171, "B-R is used on coils that do not use an external ceramic (ballast) resistor. Instead these coils use a resistor wire from the coil to the starter with an external woven heat resistor cover. The other embossed marking, 12V is used on coils with an external ceramic resistor."

Unfortunately, my car is 850 miles away, but I know that it has a white ceramic resistor attached to the upper firewall next to the wiper motor. I can’t recall what wires are connected to it but one very well could be connected to the + terminal on the coil. However, the coil is far from original so the resistor may have been added when the coil was replaced.

I cannot find where the AIM references this external resistor nor any detail concerning the coil connections.

I paid quit a bit of money for an original 287 coil at Carlisle and it has the B-R embossed underneath the “287”. But now I’m questioning if I have the right coil. It was the first one I had seen in 3 years of searching and it was claimed to be removed from a ’71 BB car and sitting on a shelf for 30 years. If I do have the correct (i.e. original style) resistor, do I now need to ditch the external ceramic resistor and use the resistor wire from the coil to starter?
        Floyd,

You will not find an external resistor of any type shown in the AIM for C3s. There is no external ceramic resister on C3s from the factory, and the resistance wire is part of the wiring harness, and thus it will not show in the AIM.

It will only confuse the issue, but I have been told by a usually reliable source that the "B R" stands for Ballast Resister. See how confusing it is if you believe everything on the Internet? Bon Jour.

          Floyd,
It was great meeting you at Carlisle! The original coil that came with my '69 (270) has "B-R" embossed on the top.

I always wondered about the B-R coils too until I found this.

-not 69 nor L-36 specific, but may help explain.

                  Floyd,

The original coil on my 390hp car is 287 with B-R. I am 725757

The ignition coil on my 1970 LS-5 is 287 B-R just as stated in the 1970-1972 JG.
