    Ralph,

Decades ago, several "barn find" 65's still had their original black GF-90 filter with a groove on the hex portion.

I don't know what the 65 JG shows.

1965 TIM&JG (5th ed.) calls for grooved hex on the GF-90's. Here's a pic & zoom that I took in April 1968, off my first car, which I was then in the process of buying: '65 #04835 L79. 32,000 miles at that time.

          Thanks Wayne. Excellent picture.

Here's another of a very well known green 65 FI conv with only 1500 miles. Pic was taken in about 1977 before anything was cleaned/touched.

Black fuel filters with white printing were used exclusively from about early January 63 through the end of the 65 model year.

Silver filters with red printing were used for 62's (with FI) through early 63.

The old Orange and black AC boxes for the GF-90's have a silver painted /red filter with just a hint of a groove in the hex. The later NOS boxes GF-90's arte not painted silver but plated. Course you didn't ask this.
For me it all started at the NCRS National at Bowling Green in 2001 or so. I was a spectator observing the 63's being judged and notice all of the '63's except one were getting dinged because of the hex thing.
One of the midyears passed the scrutiny of the judges as his filter had no grooves in the hex. But old JD caught the owner but kept quiet. Seems he was using an AC GF-99. I believe those filters have the tube sticking out. Well he cut the tubes off, etc and flew threw the judging process. Was very funny I thought at the time.
You know who you are here.

JD.... what color filter do you have on your white 63 car? Black with white lettering or silver with red lettering?

Which filter do you think would be correct? You're late March, right?

Michael, My 63, the LWC has one of the first repros that showed up at an NCRS regional meet. I mean as soon as they were made I got one and put it on the car two days before taking it to a regional. It's black.

More info on silver GF 90. Last week at Corvette Carlisle a friend bought me a box of FI parts. In that box was a well used silver/red GF-90's with NO grooves on the hex Mike. Not even a hint of a groove which I found very interesting.
I gave away a black filter to a buddy that also had no grooves.
But I have seen various photos from you and others showing new cars and original cars that did in fact have a GF90 with a hint of a groove.
I was never sure what color filter should be on my late Feb FI engine. I originally thought it should be silver but black seems to be what flies today
                .
One might also think that possibly both colors were used at the same time for a while don't you think. That's pure BS though as I have zero documentation to back that up. Just a thought.

You have it right, JD, if you have a black filter and a March 63 production date. On 2 January 63, the black filter replaced the silver filter in production. The black filter was then used through the end of 65 production.

So, all 62's with FI and 63's from start of production through the end of December 62 had silver w/red lettering filter.

Here's one of two NOS that I bought at a Hawaiian Chev dealer that was going out of business, while on vacation in 1980 (or maybe a year later). Were in plain AC boxes. the feathered end of the red arrow has smeared paint.
