    L71 in a Biscayne

last night at a car show a 4 door 1967 Chevrolet Biscayne showed a L71 under the hood. The owner claimed it was a rare matching numberd car. I would of had no trouble believing it was a Copo ordered car but when I looked inside for the 4 speed I found a powerglide.Did Chevrolet ever put L71's in passanger cars with powerglides? The motor had all the makings of the real deal from its triangle chrome air cleaner to it chromed valve covers.

As far as I know NEVER. I really doubt that this car is original because I doubt that GM would have built this combination (i.e. L-71 with Powerglide) even on a COPO.

Walter -- agree with Joe --- my research shows that 4 door Biscayne could be ordered with L-36 427 which was 390 hp with Holly or 385 hp with Q-Jet -- would be 3 speed manual, 4 speed manual or 3 speed turbo hydro powerglides were being phased out and found only on low hp combinations - cannot see this as COPO

        Carl -

And at least one '67 Impala SS427 was built with the L-72 (425hp, solid lifters) and a Muncie. It was built for Chevrolet Chassis Engineering, special-ordered with the L-72/4-speed combination, and I "tagged" it for employee purchase when I heard about it. As soon as it accumulated the required 3,000 miles, I bought it in December, 1966 from Chevrolet Engineering and drove it home. Photo below shows the "Special Order" tag I still have, which was riveted to the driver's side front fender reinforcement. I sold the car in Flint a year or so later, and it's probably long-since gone to a pile of iron oxide dust.

Wow John, what a car that must have been, the ultimate sleeper. Did you see this one that sold at Mecum today for $200K?

Decades ago, I had a 66 Caprice that came new with a solid lifter 425 HP 427 and 4 speed. That's a very strange combination. Same engine as a 66 Corvette 425 HP. Even had the Corvette style exhaust manifolds and transistor ignition.

Milt Robson had a black one in his collection. Almost no miles. Story goes that the original owner had tried to buy a 396 crate engine, but to no avail. He then ordered the cheapest car he could buy with the engine, before the car was delivered he received his crate engine. He took the car and just put it into storage

There were 1965 Impalas with the L-78 engine. They used the same exhaust manifolds as 1965 Corvette with L-78. There were 1,838 of them built. There were 1,856 1966 full size Chevrolets with L-72 which used the same exhaust manifolds as 1966 Corvette. The 1965 and 1966 full size Chevrolets with L-78 or L-72 were the only big block passenger cars that ever used the Corvette exhaust manifolds.

Looks very close to the Riverside Gold used for 1969 Corvettes.

Cannot remember the color, just remember seeing a screaming B body in either '67 or '68. Spent several late nights on Woodward with a couple of friend that lived in Detroit.
