    69 lacquer paint

I'm painting my 69 435 HP convertible in lacquer paint (white). Do I buff the whole car or buff from body line up like a midyear? Technical manual does not say. Thanks! Jeff

There was no set rule on buffing .At St. Louis the cars went through a reflow oven (baked) that leveled the paint the buffers just gave it a light buff job . Some colors got more buffing than others . On your car I would very lightly sand it and buff it until it gets a good gloss leaving some orange peel .

Body line up. The original paint cars in my garage (both 72, but same idea) show a definite change in orange peel below the beltline.

But those were painted with the reflowing lacquer Patrick. Never available for trade use. He will have to lightly buff below belt line or the car will have less gloss than the door jambs

            Jeff,

If you use an orbital buffer on the lower sections instead of a conventional rotating pad, it will bring up some gloss without removing as much texture.

Unless the paint is rough, you may want to buff without color sanding.

Actual rubbing compound will remove quite a bit of material so you may want to try some less aggressive products. One that I like is called Finesse-it by 3-M.

You're not looking for actual orange peel. That's a typical enamel surface term. Lacquer has amuch different appearance. The dimension of peak to peak of the texture are much less with lacquer.

IF your body repairs are well sealed, IF your painter is skilled spraying lacquer, IF you are not scared of taking a little risk, use the slowest drying thinner in your paint and you can eliminate the majority of the buffing. Be careful and not apply to much material in a coat, not get in a big hurry to recoat, it will work.

Back in the day it seems like we would apply a final "mist coat" that was a higher ratio thinner to color. If I remember it would flow out better and achieve a higher gloss without much buffing.

Like Dick said all repairs must be sealed well. IMO white was the easiest to apply and make look great. Non-Polychromatic paints in general I think are more forgiving. What are most folks using under lacquer today? I really like the Epoxy primers today like this one. Has anyone put Lacquer over it?

Mike, I like the DP primer on the glass, do your repairs, recoating areas that you go through, don't sand it, use PPG K 36 for my blocking primer, immediately before painting reduce the DP 100% and shoot it as a sealer. By the time you get the gun clean and your color coat mixed, you are ready to paint. Be mindful of recommended redcoat times with the DP, it adheres chemically, not mechanically and had a recommended time.

Thanks for all your input. I'm painting the car with PPG lacquer and using DP as a sealer. I've been painting cars since 1989 in our body shop so I'm very familiar with body work and painting. I'm just use to spraying base clear as that all we've used for years (using water base now). By the way, we just painted a cortez silver 69 in waterbase and it looks great! Of course this is for a nice driver or local show car kind of car. Metallics lay down perfect. Jeff

Jeff when I painted my 1970 Corvette coupe in 1991 with Donnebrooke Green Dupont lacquer I wet sanded by hand the color coat with 3M 414Q Micro Fine 1200 color sanding paper and then Micro Fine 1500 color sanding paper. I then used Dupont 101S Lacquer Rubbing Compound which is a light cutting compound for hand application. I liked the results.

Shelf life of lacquer is a very long time if kept in a climate controlled environment. Got a friend that painted his 66 with lacquer he had for over 20 years. We can still buy it here in IL but not sure for how long.
