Car won't shut off after harness fire rebuilds installed?

SO AFTER MY ENGINE HARNESS FIRE IN MY 60 I HAD THE GENERATOR REBILT new armature etc., THE STARTER REBILT, AND I REPLACED THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR AND OF COURSE THE WIRE HARNESS AND ALSO THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE CAR STARTS RIGHT UP, THE AMMETER SHOWS SYSTEM IS CHARGING BUT WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED OFF THE ENGINE KEEPS RUNNING, THE FUEL GAUGE GOES TO EMPTY SO THE ELECTRICALS ARE OFF. WHEN THE BATTERY IS DISCONNECTED THE MOTOR KEEPS RUNNING THE ONLY WAY IT SEEMS TO STOP THE ENGINE IS TO STALL IT IN GEAR. CAN ANYBODY HELP? MAYBE THE NEW SOLENOID IS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY?

    Just a possibility,
The gen might be the culpret as it feeds the B+ in the voltage regulator and the ignition switch also can be powered by a sticking regulator contact.
    Did you polorize?
Also make sure the I terminal ( smaller of the 2 small wires) on the solonoid is the wire going to the coil for the 12V coil start boost during cranking.
Does your generator try to run on its own with the belt off?

Yes it was polarized, no the generator doesn't try to run with no belt. I think I have it. The plus battery cable was arcing across the resistor terminal so I turned it away. The car now starts runs and shuts off. But now the ammeter is showing an immense amount of charging taking place. For the past 3 years the ammeter barely edged into the plus charge side now it is showing 15 plus amps of charging. Should it be charging that much even with a new armature in the generator? I haven't driven the car very far just down the street and back and the battery could be way down after this adventure but that seems like a lot. Any thoughts?

Might be OK. I let my '68 sit for about 3 weeks. It started right up, but for the first 15 miles, the ammeter was almost pegged. I was just starting to worry about it and it went back to normal. I think it can take a lot to bring a battery back to full charge,

          Jef,
Put a battery charger on the battery and let it charge, then start the car after charging, (charger dis-connected) and if things are normal your guage should not be showing 15 amps.

Check the insulator bushing on the field terminal on the generator. If the bolt or the wire connector touches the case, the generator will be on full output. This will give a 15 amp charge at idle and peg the meter off idle. Don't ask how I know.
