    Where to plug in SW oil temp sender

    Hi all,

    I have a Stewart Warner oil temp gauge and sender. The sender has a fitting that is made to screw in somewhere so that the sensor can send the temp signal back to the gauge. I'm not seeing anything obvious as to where this screws into the (283) block, so I didn't know if people welded something to the oil pan for it or what. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Welded mine into oil pan - know of no area on motor that a connector was located.

      Oil temp gauges were popular add ons back in the day for those who either wanted to show off a nice 3 or 4 panel of instruments under their dash, or perhaps were really into performance cars (like me and my buds). It was common to drop your pan and have the fitting for the sensor welded (or brazed) into it by your neighborhood hot rod shop. The last time I used an oil temp gauge of any sort was in my 86 Chevy wagon, and that was actually a transmission oil sensor. An earlier 80 wagon I had lost 3 transmissions (200R) and I wanted to keep a closer eye on my 86 tranny. It had a sensor that was conveniently fitted into a port identified for that purposon the transmission by the gauge manufacturer.

        Alan/Stu,

        Where is the best place on the pan to weld the fitting?

        Thanks,

        Bob

          Bob;

          I don't know if there is an ideal position to locate the sender in the pan. Unless there is specific instructions from the manufacturer, I suppose you would want it a few inches off the pan bottom, away from any baffles or the drain plug fitting. Other than that, I suggest the next consideration would be the best physical location suitable for an easy connection with no interference with any other hardware or linkage, etc.
