    C1 Heater Motor

Have original heater motor #5044290, but it is not working. Brought it to a couple of electrical repair shops in the area but was informed that parts are not available to fix it. Noticed that there are reproductions and replacements available. The replacements have two wires (ground and hot) as compared with the original/reproduction that has one. But there is some information that the original/repro's rotate counter-clockwise. Don't know about the replacements in that regard. Does anyone have any experience with the replacements as to proper fit and function? Thanks. Richard

    Richard,

I've repaired original motors as typically they just need a good cleaning. As long as it's not seized and the armature and field wiring is good, they usually can be repaired. Did they take it apart to see what it needs? If the shaft is seized on the front bushing then it's a problem. I had one that pulled the bushing out of the front case and it was history. You cannot easily replace the bushings.

The better replacements are available now with one brown wire as original. I just used one and it works fine. However, the wire has an incorrect terminal end. It should be a female.... a male is installed on it. You'll have to change that. Also, the wire is about 2" short to be able to route it through the defroster hose clip on the diverter box as original. Too bad they didn't get that right. I think the motor is also used on other makes and now has a Corvette application.

The motor in my 59 was very noisy, but after cleaning it up, repainting the housing, lubing the shaft and bearings and replacing the brown wire, old and brittle. it just like new and no noise. I look at the Corvette Central one, but the configuration is not quite right as it has screws instead of rivets holding the fax cover together.
