C-3 Carpet Installation - Carpet Under or Over Firewall Insulation on Driver's Side??

1970 - The black firewall insulation section with the half circle cut out for the steering column has a one inch "lip" on its lower edge that has two additional cut outs for the carpet plugs that line up with the plug holes in the firewall. Does the top edge of the carpet go under or over this "lip"? Thanks...Clark

I ran across this older thread that didn't have a reply...

I believe the carpet edge goes under the firewall insulation.

      Hi,
On my 71 (6589) it appears the upper edge of the carpet was laid on top of the insulation and it's plastic "cover" located below the steering column.
I'm thinking that if it had been tucked under the plastic cover the cover would have left an impression in the carpet nap.
I'm not sure just how typical this might be.
      Regards,
      Alan

      This is the original carpet.
I moved the heel and dimmer pads to new carpet.

This is what I typically find on original cars.

Really? I'm glad this subject came up. I assumed (but don't know) that the firewall insulation went on top of the edge of the carpet for a more finished look. So if I was wrong, then I installed my carpet incorrectly.

Is the front edge of the carpet on top of the insulation on both the driver's and passenger's side?

            Hi Mark,
Yes, it's typically the same way on the passenger's side.

Both of those are consistent with what I've seen as well, including the car I was working on yesterday.
