    1963 Harmonic balancer

I am looking for a correct harmonic balancer for my 63 300 hp engine and hope to find one at Carlisle. I checked the AIM and the shop manual and can't find a part number for it. Is the part number stamped on it similar to the 8" high performance balancer and does any one have a photo of a correct one?
    Thanks for any assistance

The part number was GM #3817684. However, I don't think this number or any derivative thereof appeared on the balancer. This was a riveted type balancer but without an integral pulley.

      Joe,
Thanks for the part number. Would anyone have a photo?

          Jack,

If you are asking a question I would submit the 63 low hp balancer is like picture #2 without the holes around the perimeter. I think the holes came either in 64 or 65 and were used for engine balance, the flywheel is like that also in that holes of this size were located around the circumference for the same purpose.

            Tim -

The equally-spaced pattern of through-holes in the inertia ring weren't related to balance - they were part of the design "tuning" of the balancer. No drilling or machining of the balancer on a finished engine in the hot-test stands was done until sometime in the mid- to late 70's when GM Balance Engineering added that capability to the hot-test equipment.

John, thanks for correcting me about the holes around the circumference of the damper.

The part#1021 flywheel that's on my 63 has a date sometime in 1966 and the small holes are present and there were plugs inside three of the holes. Could this balance have started around that time frame? I can't think of another reason why the plugs would be installed if not for balance.

The flywheel was cast at Saginaw, then machined and neutral-balanced at Flint V-8 as a separate component prior to installation on the engine; the holes/plugs were part of the balancing operation in the Flywheel Department.

                  Thanks John,

I assumed because the holes looked the same on the damper as shown in post #4 they were used the same way. The damper on my 63 looks identical except no holes around the circumference. I'm curious if the part # changed in 64 or 65 for the low hp damper.
