Source For 1957 Corvette With Fuel Injection Advertisement

Guys, over the years I have seen an advertisement showing a red 1957 Corvette 3/4 rear view with a cut away view of a fuel injection unit behind it. I believe the ad reads "toward an American classic, the 1957 Corvette with fuel injection. I think it may also mention one horsepower per cubic inch. I first remember seeing this advertisement in either "Life" or "Look" magazine. I have looked over many sites with reprinted ads and have yet to see this one. Can anyone tell me a source for this? Thanks in advance! Brooks Glover (2141)

          have a look at: http://www.c1registry.com/index.php?...57&job=ShowAds

each image is clickable to blow-up (twice, medium and high res)

other years are there as well, C22 and C3 ads can be found in similar areas on the C2 and C3 registries...

Rob, thanks for your reply to my post. I looked at the web site you mentioned and found the particular ad that I have been looking for. Unfortunately I don't have the technical expertise to download and print this ad to the size that I would like to have. Thanks just the same! Brooks Glover (2141)

Those are truly some of David E Davis' finest work. While he was advertising copywriter for Campbell-Ewald he did just outstanding Corvette ads. As I remember from his presentation at Williamsburg Regional he had a colleague (edit add: Barney Clark) who did some of the work, but I can not remember that name. Thanks for the post Steve. Memories.

Edit add: I couldn't resist doing a little web surfing about David E and those ads even though it is way past my bed time. This quote from Corvette Bloger stood out: "Art Director Jim Bernardin talks much of David E. Davis on his website Old Chevy Ads where he tells the stories behind the ads. Of Davis, Bernardin says “It wasn’t until I began working with David E. Davis Jr. that we were able to make ads that I thought represented Corvette best.”

To make the search for Old Chevy Ads easier there was a link in the original CB piece. Here it is:
Hi. I am Jim Bernardin and I had a lot to do with with making Chevy magazine and newspaper ads, commercials, catalogs, and sales promotion stuff for 35 years. People like collecting many of the pieces and they are available mostly as tear sheets from old magazines and still existing catalogs. But nobody ever says anything about who did them and why. That is information I will try to provide. I hope it will make owning an old Chevy ad even more fun.

There is a whole other world of interesting people and advertising here if you care to follow it. It is a little late for me, but maybe work will be slow tomorrow.

Terry, thanks for the link to the blog. I had the great pleasure of spending a few hours with David E. a couple of months before he passed away. It was one of those rare times when you actually get the chance visit with someone whose work you admired and let them know it. While they are still around. He had an office with the most wonderful collection of automotive "stuff", and everything had a story behind it. If you haven't read his book, by all means pick up a copy.

I never knew about Bernardin. Thanks Terry. Years ago I had the fortune to speak with David E. at Amelia Island. He and his wife were very gracious and friendly. He told me about the crash in his MG that scarred him and the realization he would be a better writer than racer, his work on Corvette ads and the emotion he put in the works, his farm near Ann Arbor, and his '62 FI. He said he put American TT's on it because he always liked the look. I wonder what happened to that car. Just before I left he said "Wait a second". He pulled out a piece of paper and autographed it along with his by-line Cogito ergo zoom. I have it next to my Zora autographs. He was a great writer.

One of the places I found late last night was a blog of his son describing some of that "stuff" that went to auction in early 2012. Did you get to see the 9K mile 1953 Cadillac? David E was quite a character, and I cherish the memory of his story of the advertising part of his career that he gave at Williamsburg. That event exemplifies one of the reasons I attend NCRS events: you never know who will show up, what will happen, or what opportunities will present themselves -- and many of these are once in a lifetime experiences. In my experience it is hard to beat those kinds of serendipitous happenings.

HI Brooks. Rather than reply thru NCRS email I will answer your question here. I don't have a copies/prints of the 57. I actually haven't seen them in a long time. Nice that the fellows have put them up for all to see.
Try Robs idea to print some good copies.
Maybe someone will email you the pics. Good luck, John

David E. Davis, Jr. items and his cherry '51 Caddie hit the block at Bonhams auction in Scottsdale

On January 19th starting at precisely 10:30am, Bonhams auctioneers at the Barrett-Jackson mega-event in Scottsdale will begin bringing to the stage lots 1 through 151 as part of the auction house's "The Scottsdale Sale". The lots represent a wide range of significant and unique items from the estate of automotive journalism guru and personality David E. Davis, Jr, who suddenly and sadly passed away on March 27th of last year following surgery.

The items are a vast array of Mr. Davis' collection of rarities assembled during his nearly 60-year career history with automobiles, the people who designed and built them, and especially with those legends who risked their lives racing them. Lots range from lot number 1 through to lot 151, and these can all be seen online and bid on pre-auction.

Among the array of a lifetime's collectibles are included several pieces of desk art, original wall art, rare signed photographs of Dan Gurney, Juan Manuel Fangio, Carroll Shelby, and others, plus a great number of authoritative books, many now out of print. Not to mention a perfectly preserved crimson red 1951 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe – a favored Harley Earl design – with fewer than 9,000 original miles, listed as lot number 326.

Editor's Note: Matt Davis is the son of the late David E. Davis. We asked Matt to write the item because he is familiar with the contents of the auction. But we also want to say that Matt in no way will profit or receive any proceeds from the auction of his father's property at this auction.
Behind every item there's a big and personal story and the pleasure of bidding on and owning any of these choice memorabilia would be made finer only by the original owner and raconteur being present to regale us with the details. Davis is acknowledged as being the one responsible for the original success of Car and Driver Magazine in the 1960s and of having saved it again in the 1970s and 80s. Prior to that, Davis had worked originally at Road & Track. Following the CandD years, Davis then founded Automobile Magazine which he turned into a success despite heavy industry skepticism about the need for another car enthusiast title.

The two key items on auction by our assessment - though it's tough to choose, of course - are the all original '51 Caddie with smooth running 331 cubic inch OHV V-8 and lot n.128 - a well preserved red felt race-day pennant from the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup race, won in that edition by the Lancia boys at an average speed of 60 mph. This was the first race in history with photographic evidence of a chequered flag being used to hail the winning car.

There are items available for all budgets and all levels of car enthusiast. Go to the Bonhams sitehttp://www.bonhams.com/eur/auction/19680/ and start your bidding for a piece of history from the lifetime of a larger than life car connoisseur and story teller.

Terry, he had an office at the garage pictured behind the Cadillac with much of the stuff in the auction there. That garage is a meeting place for the "car people" in the Detroit area. People rent space for their cars and they and others show up the first Sat. of every month for coffee. It's always a surprise who shows up. If you're going to see a prototype Ford GT with all the test wires hanging off, that was where it would be. I agree with you about the events, it's always the surprise happenings that you remember the most. George

Steven, thanks for the link. I hadn't been aware of the auction. Since he passed, I haven't been to the garage as often as I would like.
