Looking for suggestions in how to remove rusted bolt. See pic. Exactly where is it threaded in the cross member frame? Do I try to heat it at the top of the frame or the bottom where you see the bolt that is surrounded by the rubber gasket. Thx Dave

Re: 67 427 frame cross member for differential
I had to snap one on my 66 it was then murder to pop the cross menber off of the mounts. then i ground the stub flat and drilled it out. the chassis was separated from the body so i turned it over to do the repair. i also had to snap and drill out the trailing arm swing bolts. be patient.- Top

Bill, I have the body off the chassis. Is the thread of that bolt near the top of the cross member? If so I was going to try heating the top welded bracket of that cross member and then see if I can loosen the bolt after some serious prolonged heat. I tried it briefly but don't think I got it hot enough.- Top

Bob the cross member fits around a round bracket that has the threads right at the top. you really can not heat the threads of the bracket because they are surrounded by the cross member. you could try heating the cap screw itself and apply wax to the area and hope it runs in and lubricate the threads. but that did not work for me. if you take a look at the assembly manual you will see what i mean by no acess to the threads. LI Corvette supply book has same in section 51- Top

That bolt that goes through the bushing on each side threads into a weld nut inside the bottom of the "sombrero" formation on the frame (see photo below); if that weld nut gets stripped or broken loose, the repair gets really ugly, as the body has to come off to access it from above.

John, Do you you know of any tricks so the weld nut does not get stripped or broken? I've tried to loosen the bolt (generously) but it won't budge. The body is off the frame but how do you access it from above?; it is solid metal with no access.Attached Files- Top

Dave,
What Wayne said is about your only option. Mine were really rusty too...But they did come loose...Once the bolts are out thats the easy part. Getting the bushing out of the "sombrero" is the tough part.
