    Vinyl Covered Hardtop

When i bought my 65 it had a black covered vinyl hardtop. Understanding these were not available in 65, how many were sold from GM in 67? I have not seen this top on any cars!

I don't have my Black Books with me but "assume" the '67 numbers are there???? In the town where I lived a major dealer had vinyl, usually white and tan, installed on mid years and on coupes and convertibles from '68-about '75. I had a friend who bought a new white '74 coupe with tan interior and had a matching tan covered top including the butresses. It actually looked pretty good. Another bought a blue convertible with silver interior and had the hardtop covered in silver vinyl and silver stripes a few years earlier.

I have a factory original 1967 black vinyl covered hardtop on my '67. I don't have a book with numbers in front of me but according to the C-2 Registry 8.57% of the hardtops had the vinyl covering.

6,880 hardtops were ordered in 1967 (5,985 in addition to the soft top, 895 in place of the soft top); 1,966 of them had the optional C08 vinyl covering.

I've had a number of these; I like them because you really don't have to worry about paint damage or cracks in the hardtop. I put a headliner in one last week and I put the top on a table and worked on the headliner. No worries about chipping or scratching the paint. As I understand the production process, all covered tops were painted car color before the vinyl was installed.

My original 67 hard top has black vinyl. About 3 years ago I had the top restored by Glass Works. I think they did a great job. I have a precut piece of the vinyl material which came on a large cardboard tube. I purchased it from GM in the late 70's intending to use it when I restored the top but as it turned out Glass Works preferred to use their own material.
