67' 427/390 leaf spring and rear shock attachments

Is the washer plate that is inside the frame rail for the rear leaf spring bolt pressure fitted to the frame (tried to pop it free; may be rusted in, see pic). Also is the rear lower shock mounted bracket threaded to the frame portion that hangs down or just slide into the two holes. (can't get it to move; tried to pound it out but not sure if rusted in or threaded in)? See pic Thx Dave

The bushing cup in the trailing arm is crimped into place You will have to peel back the lip on the bottom and it will come off. The lower shock mount is not threaded into place. You might need to heat it up a little and pound it out.

Hi Dave, thewasher plate (cup) that you are talking about can be pried out with a big screwdriver or whatever. Repro ones are about 2 bucks each. The shock mount just gets knocked out. Maybe use heat and protect the threads.

Is there a crimping tool to put in a new bushing cup after the frame is sand blasted and powder coated?

          Dave -

The lower shock mount is a machined steel forging with a "D"-shaped cross-section adjacent to the threaded section that's oriented in a "D"-shaped hole in the rear leg of the spindle support (see photo below); after removing the nut and cotter pin, the mount is driven out. Age and corrosion usually require use of PB Blaster or Kroil and a "knocker" tool threaded on the mount, and/or an air hammer; don't break the legs of the spindle support while pounding or you'll have a REAL problem.

Thx guys! Last question.......is it best to replace the shock mounts with new ones? I assume it isn't worth it to salvage the old ones.

Dave salvage the original, as the some of the repro's I tried using requires to much hard hitting, the splined area is slightly bigger in Dia. As John says You want to get a special tool that threads onto the shock mount. There cheap money. maybe If you belong to a local chapter someone will surely have one. If not let me know I can put one in the mail to you. Just send me a PM.

I used a ball peen hammer (ball end) to roll over the new washer plates. Strike the ball peen hammer with a second hammer. The ball should be large enough to cause the edge to roll out. You could also use a press with the ball peen hammer.
