C2, How to "Prep" new air filter foam element

So I decided to replace the old air filter foam element on my '63 coupe, 327/340.
Purchased a new one, part #22-04A from Long Island Corvette Supply.
In the package was a small 3" x 2" instruction sheet in which it says to
"Dip in SAE 10W 30 oil and SQUEEZE to remove excess oil.

Can anyone tell me if it's really necessary to do and why this is recommended?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

Jeff, the oil on the foam element will attract the dirt and keep in place. What I do with my 63 is run a paper element and use the foam for judging.

      Hello Ed,

Any reason for the paper element and do you find it to be more effective than the foam?

I think the paper element filters better then the foam and even the AC brand ones are not expensive and available at most auto part stores..
One problem with the foam filter is that after a few years it turns to powder.
It did that on my 62 Corvette.
As far as preping the foam, get a K & N ki. It contains the oil, cleaning chemicals and instructions.

You can also actually get a K & N filter element which I did many years ago. I keep my foam element for shows only. It seems, for me anyway, no matter how well or often you squeeze out the oil there will still be some oil puddles where there not supposed to be, and that oil attracts dirt too.

            Jeffrey -

The pleated paper element will ALWAYS outperform an oiled foam element from a filtration efficiency perspective, and won't crumble/disintegrate.
