    1970 fender lip notches

My 3 1970'S have a notch about 3" long & half the width of the lip with rounded corners & radius in the corners on the top of the front fenders. I was ask about it & am wandering was the mold changed for the 70 model or did the 68 & 69 have the notches. Also was it carried over to the 1971 & on?

My 70 #2650 also has the notches ,they were for tire clearance on turns or driveways . I would guess 69 through 72 had them . In 73 they changed body mounts so they were not needed .

I agree that they were there for sharp turns especially if there was a bump in the drive way. I boinked my 67 that way. I don't remember them on 68& 69'S though.

My original owner 1968 has the lip notch mentioned at the top of the fender and going down from this location towards the door there is another one that is smaller. My original owner 1970 has a GM replacement front surround and this replacement has two fender lip notches.

From the recently revised 1968-69 judging guide:Check the inner lips and the lower areas of both front fenders for cutaway areas that would enable the mounting of larger tires. A slight thinning of the front fender lip at two points is normal. One is on center; the other is 6 inches toward the rear.

Ken, In all your time around Corvettes have you not noticed guys "feeling the fenders". They walk over, look away, and the run their hands along the underside of the fender lips. Heck, they even do it in public, on TV, at the auctions. What did you think they were doing? Ops, maybe you better not answer that here in public.

Terry. I always thought that they (we) were looking for missing fender lips and not the notches. Duh!

Out here along the border the border patrol looks & feels under the fenders but not just Corvettes. Not sure why but maybe they are all Master Judges. LOL

Ken, I think they do that for fruit flies. What else could possibly come across the border and why would anyone hide anything?? Shoulda' stayed in Auburn and the nice winters. Steve

                          Re: 1970 fender lip notches

A few months ago I was talking with a local Texas State Trooper who advised me that I-30, about 5 minutes north of where we live, is the main east-west artery for drugs and other illegal matter to be transported from Mexico to the east coast and north. It is very common to see a State Trooper searching a vehicle in this area every 20-30 miles. They confiscate quite a large amount of illegal drugs, cash, and other items weekly.

Thanks REBA Mine also have the second notch which I had not noticed & assume it started in 68 thru72. I guess as TERRY said I was missing out of being one the fender feelers. I was always more of a top fender caresser with my polishing rag in public.
