    1965 wheel covers

I have asked this question before but did not receive an answer . Has anyone had the reproduction 65 hubcaps judged ? If so how did they do ? How do they compare to originals in look ,weight , paint etc. & if you bought a set would you do it again ? I have quite a few originals but none that are show quality.

Bill: hope you get an answer -- wondered myself how the repros judge.

FWIW: I have used Charles Sihilling Polishing (Santa Ana, CA), to remove dings & polish several sets of '65 wheelcovers. Tom Crockatt recommended his shop, and I was happy with the results.

What you get back are beautiful stainless steel covers, ready for flash chroming. Without chroming, they will have a more golden hue than blue-ish. So the spinners will look slightly different. Then you should mask and beadblast the areas to be painted for adhesion.

Not counting your labor, this is cheaper than buying the repros in my experience --since you already have the cores.

Bill, I looked at the repro '65 hubcaps with Tom Ames at a prior Regional. There are slight differences that are easier to see when you put a nice original next to the repro. George Johnson does a really nice job restoring '65 caps. That's where I got mine.

      Hope this helps.

I have a 1966 with 1965 wheel covers that are original and almost excellent condition. Car is in process of new mechanical restore to include trying to locate 427 CI 390HP block, etc. Have no idea how the '65 wheel covers ended up on car as I bought it in 1976 after it sat in a deceased friend's garage for several years. I have no idea what they may be worth.

Jim they look good in the photo with the black walls (thats what mine came with). Does the paint match the originals it looks dark in the photos .
