1972 LT1 Engine Pad stamped on Saturday?
Hello all. I am looking at a 1972 LT1 AC coupe for sale, and posted a photo of the engine pad here. My problem with this stamp, which looks perfect to me, is that it was stamped on April 22nd, 1972, which is a Saturday. The block casting date is February 11, 1972, which is a Friday. Did they actually stamp blocks on Saturdays back in the 70s? I have owned dozens of Corvettes over the years, and have never seen a front pad stamped on a weekend before. Is this an anomaly? The VIN does have an L in it, denoting that it is a true LT1, and all of the components of the LT1 are there as well, including the AIR pump. It is also a low mileage car. The smog pump, alternator, transmission, differential, distributor, are all dated between February 1972 and April 1972. The build date of the car is April 27th, 1972. My biggest concern of all is, did GM actually stamp block pads on Saturdays? Do any of you have Top Flight cars, or Judged cars, that have been stamped on a Saturday or Sunday? The fact that a car earned a certain award with components dated on a Saturday or any other day of the week means nothing. I have yet to see a judge carry the materials necessary to determine what day of the week a given date was. You might get unlucky and have a part that was dated with someone's birthday or anniversary and thus they might know what day of the week that was -- but that is a very long shot.
If there is a discussion like this we have the resources available to be able to look up the day of the week, but on the judging field -- not yet. Even though with modern technology it would be easy to do. There is just too much of the rest of the car to look at to bother with that.
If it makes you feel any better I have recorded three LT1s with that same date stamp and two big blocks. Based on that I would be confident that both Flint and Tonawanda engine plants worked that day. anyone, even a rookie or observer judge with a smart phone can punch in "what day of the week was.. 4/22/1972 " and get Saturday within about 0.5 seconds right there on the judging field. Time to come into the 21st century and get that Iphone or Galaxy buddy....

since you have the I5, then you can just ask siri what day of the week, and not have to punch it in,,,,,0.4 secs
p.s.- siri not only told me Saturday in half a second, she said it was earthday too. she's sure smart...Comment

I have an Iphone 5, pal. I still don't have time on the judging field to bother with such nonsense. If my observer judge wants to do that s/he can knock his/her sox off. I could load my whole engine, alternator, carburetor and so on data base into my Iphone and check the date accuracy of all the engine accessories. I could probably load my engine pad photos in as well. How much time do you want to spend on each car?
Remember we are judging the appearance of the car and parts. Only for Bowtie/Crossed Flags are we concerned with the absolute originality of the car and its parts.TerryComment
