1967 spare carrier front bolt lengths

Quick question regarding the spare carrier front bolts on my '67 Coupe:

I was tinkering on my (unrestored) car and trying to figure out why my spare tire was bouncing around inside the tub assembly. It's an original rally rim but the tire is a 60-70's vintage 7.75-15 Atlas whitewall versus an OEM spare tire. Since I don't have the tank sticker for verification (my fault, which is another story in itself), I assumed this car probably came with whitewalls originally (which really doesn't matter much at the present).

I ended up adding fat pieces of foam between the spare tire and the top of the carrier tub to make it stay in place solidly, so no more bouncing noises while driving the car.

It dawned on me that the front carrier bolts might be a different length for optional redline tires, like they were for my '66 with goldlines. Since I don't know what was installed at the factory on this '67, anything is possible. My bolts measure roughly 9 1/4" from the bottom of the crossmember face to the flat of the head, or around 10 1/4" overall.

So my questions are - did my car possibly come with the optional redline tires? Is there anything else I should check for validation? It would be a pretty cool discovery if it did....

Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Charlie

    Happy 4th everyone !

When a 67 was born with red-lines, the bolts were about 3/8 longer, I'm sure there is lots of guys out there that would trade bolts with you.

      Charlie -

Cars with redline tires also used an 8" rear lock bolt (vs. 7" with black or whitewall tires).

I never really thought about this, what's so different about the tire to need a longer bolt if it's the same size. The rims were 6" and the bolt on if they were used are 6"..

The redlines were wider than whitewalls.

            Thanks for that info John,

I just went out and measured the locking bolt and it turns out to be 8" long. So it looks like my car might have originally been equipped with redlines!

When it comes time to get new tires, I'll get some redlines. For now I'll keep my eye open for an original redline spare (ya, I know, break open the big piggy bank). I always thought redlines would compliment the Lynndale blue / black stinger / black leather color combo....

Great news Holiday weekend for me!! Thanks for your help! Charlie
