    Re: So what's the verdict-Bloomington?

Overall we had a very good experience. There were some hiccups but I'm sure they will be worked out. We got to the area on Wed. evening. The hotel was very reasonably priced so we got there the evening before set-up day so we didn't have to leave Detroit at 1 AM to miss the Chicago traffic. We scoped out the grounds that evening and Thursday morning arrived early to set up. Gates were closed and we got on line. At 7 they opened and we got in relatively quickly and did what needed to be done. We stopped someone who looked "official" driving around in a golf cart and asked what time we could get in Friday and were told the gates open at 7. What time does the public get in? 7. Well then, are we to asume that we have to set up as the public is milling around waiting to buy? "Yup, just like it's always been". Not- it has always been 24 hour access and we usually got there at 6:30 so we were ready when the customers were there and ready to buy. Finally he told us that he would be there early and if we had the right credentials he would let us in. And he did do as promised so we were set up and open for business at 7. At about 6:45 a couple of kids rode around informing us that the gates were about to close and be locked for the night so we had to be out. This turned out to not be true in that there was one gate left open so we could get out any time. Traffic was down and we did somewhat less than we had planned but it was still pretty good.

Nice venue. I didn't mind the layout at all, and compared to St. Charles there is a lot less walking.
Parking is MUCH improved in general.
Motels have you by the, well, you know, and they charge like it too. Some have a 3 night minimum. The hotel prices and policies might kill the show.
Once the rain hit in early afternoon on Saturday the vendors picked up and many left. I was not there Sunday as I left too.
Rumor has it that this was Mecum's last year, so it will be interesting to see if their is an auction at all in 2014. The car selection at the auction was pitiful.
We will see how it looks in 2014. I'm sure I will be back for that one at least.

I thought it was a good show. I had my car judged and had very knowledgable and friendly judges. The weather was an issue. Thanks to all that helped put on the show.

Overall, we were pleased with the event and the new location and we've attended BG since the inaugural event. There is plenty of acreage for the show to grow. I think there were a few mis-steps here and there, but nothing major and that's to be expected with change. The road tour was a real hoot and the finest one in our opinion and we've done them all. The small city of Monticello, where the tour turned and headed back to Champaign, has a town square that was packed on all sides with people in bleachers clapping and waving flags. I guess the only thing we missed this time around was Jarling's Custard Cup.....but we'll take care of that next year.

I have been going to Bloomington for almost 40 years - in at least 5 different locations. That last statement HAS to take a toll. I was there on Friday and was impressed by the ease of parking, disappointed by the vendors and parts. It is what it is (not an original statement). My $.02, Don H.

I have great memories of the Bloomington event at the original location. I missed the very first one though. Fun times with good friends.

Still think at some point in the future they will come back "HOME" to Bloomington. I understand that the interstate grounds have improved with more
paving and less dust. Will see.-Larry

While not as picturesque a location as Pheasant Run, logistically it was much better when it came to parking and overall layout. On the plus side was my '63 getting Gold, my C7 order changing to Laguna Blue upon seeing it in person, and the excellent Gold School classes. The negatives were the weather (especially when combined with parking on grass), the auction (disappointing in both quantity and quality) and the small number of vendors. But all in all, still worth the 27 hour round trip drive from Long Island.

                        Re: So what's the verdict-Bloomington?

I personally enjoyed the new venue as far as the layout. They do need a cooling area ether a tent or building and improved bathroom facilities. Spoke with several venders for many it was there 1st time back in 10 years. Found many used and NOS parts that I have not seen in several years so it was a plus for me. They need more and larger signage to help locate the different areas of the event it was easy to miss the second swap meet area split by the food court . The car auction was for me a bust and as others have stated small number of cars. Do not think Mecum as a whole is promoting the event as he has in the past plus many of the cars were from his own collection in my opinion not a good thing. As far as the judging field it is good but they really need to have the grass cut much shorter so the chassis can have a more complete inspection . Thought the city of Champaign did a great job and the hotel and stores we patronized seemed happy we were there and many thanked us for coming seemed better then back at St. Charles. Just some of my thoughts but you have to get through the first year to find out problems you did not anticipate. You can't fix weather but you can with the other problem items.

I know of one car that the owner checked the box for restamped pad. He got a gold and scored very high. He was happy. I have not seen what the new Gold Certificate looks like with the the box checked??

Bill, kudos to the guy who declared that his motor was restamped.

I hope this is a new trend.

Some of the worst debates on the judging field were over fake engine stamps.

We didn't stay at the dorms which I was told was a bit problematic with regards to parking. On the negative side, I thought that the attendance of both the public and the vendors in the swap area was weak. Our space was in the NE lot which had about 1/3 empty spots once you take into account all the trucks/cars parked on spots. I don't have the numbers so maybe I am wrong. Met many NCRS members which was great.
