There is a factory installed "CAGS" lockout which prohibits low rev shifting of the lower gears forcing a 1-4,5,6 gear exchange unless mashing on the gas pedal. It was designed to save fuel, but it takes the fun out of driving a six speed. A very popular upgrade is a cheap plug-and-play harness that jumps out the sensor on the transmission. You need to get access to the underside but no cutting is required. That your brother's car doesn't have that shunt is a good sign that it wasn't molested because if it were me, that would be the first thing I'd change.

Besides the tape player that may work and the CD player that rarely works, also note that if the car is equipped with a BOSE sound system the capacitors on the individual speaker amplifiers most certainly cooked causing fuzzy or no sound. Evidentaly cheap, electrolytic capacitors with poor temperature tolerance were used. Most Corvette retailers and some ebay specialists sell refurbished circuit boards. They are not hard to replace, and if your brother's goal is keep the car somewhat original, it provides minimal upset to the original design. But if the head unit has or will be replaced, then most certainly the four speakers will have to be replaced as they are not compatable. New wiring has to be pulled to the head unit too because there is an intermediate amplifier between the components.

I had a low-mileage, 1992 Quasar Blue 6-speed vert. But for a few fixable quirks, it was one of my favorites. The car handled like it was on rails.

Thanks Mike- I had no clue on the lockout but that makes sense, that was pretty much what I experienced on the shifting - The car seems fairly well cared for except the emergency brake was disconnected- not sure why but he is getting that repaired. Radio was swapped out-as well. nice car though, I can see why you liked the 92.

Patrick - Operation of the emergency brake takes a bit of practice. You pull up the handle to set it then fold it down without pressing the release button. Likewise to release, you pull up past the point of tension and press the release button, then fold down the handle into the recess. I don't know why it was disconnected. I think it operates by cable to internal expanding shoes in the rear discs so maybe the cable got damaged or other related linkage was damaged.

Hi Jim- I had to ask my brother as it is his car- but yes, it has one. I took it out for a spin and looked it over a bit to help him out.

Thanks Mike, yeah, not sure why the previous owner disconnected either? We will get it back in working order and sorted. My 88 had some issues with E-brake, when living in CT the inspection required I engage the e-brake and rev the car and the car should not move. The car always overcame the e-brake no mater how soft i feathered the gas- PITA but got that sorted. Wonder if other C4's have quirky e-breaks?
