    1967 wiper switch question

When I put my switch on, it goes immediately to the washer cycle and I can't get it to run under "normal" conditions without washing the windshield everytime. I took the knob off and the plunger rod operates freely.

Any ideas to remedy this or do I just replace the switch? The wiper motor has just been rebuilt.

    Thanks

    Jerry,

Here's a probable solution. When the WW motor was rebuilt the rebuilder did not set the spring on the pump when he installed the solenoid. Easy to fix as the small straight spring holds the lever up when the solenoid is actuated so the arm falls into the cam and when one revolution is over the pump stops. Take the cover off the pump by removing the three screws on the top. Reach back with some small needle nose pliers and set the spring in the center of the solenoid flapper? for lack of a better name.
    This should fix your problem.
If you hear the solenoid click each time the button is pushed probably the switch is OK.

If this is as clear as mud you can call me at 1 501 834-1237.

      Jerry,

Are you sure the wires are plugged into the switch correctly. I think the wiper speeds and wash work by grounding when the switch is rotated.

        Thanks guys,

I'll look at both scenarios. I thought I had plugged the wires in on the switch correctly. Isn't there only one way for the wiring to attach?

I'll check these out over the weekend. Jow....stay by the phone, just in case.....

I rebuilt my 63 & 67 wiper motors and I tested the 67 with the switch out and ungrounded. It would not work normaly so I tested the 63 motor and it did the same.
By then I was getting hot and felt a tingle on my fingers (12V) and realized that the switch needed to be grounded.

Both tested great with the motor & switch grounded. 1 circuit went series thru another looking for a ground and crazy things happened.

            Joe,

Would it be better and probably easier if I took the pump assembly off of the motor to work on, or is my fix that simple that I just need to take the cover off of the pump? I haven't started yet, just studying some pictures and I'll attempt it this weekend.

            Thanks

              Joe,

I have the cover off the pump and I see where the straight spring is (vertical position). I have removed it from the horizontal piece. Now, is the little "finger" coming off of the solenoid "flapper" suppose to go in the square opening on the part (horizontal)? If so, I tried to lift the flapper to so that the finger fits in the opening, but there is no movement to allow me to do this. In addition, the opening on the gear settles in on the spring at 5:00 in the pump. I've run the wipers and they work and this is where the gear settles. It's about 10:30 EST here and I don't know what time zone you're in, so I didn't want to call. Maybe I can call you some night this week if you're busy today. My cell # is 860-822-3798 if you get a chance to call.

              Any thoughts?

              Thanks,

              Jerry
