    64-68, 69-74, and 75-82 Starter Heat Shields

Two questions about 64-68, 69-74, and 75-82 starter heat shields:

    1. Were all factory installed and NOS shields stamped with a logo "S" overlapping another "S" (sketch on bottom photo)?

    2. Were factory installed shields painted black?

I can tell you that my original 1969 small block shield had the manufacturer's logo you describe and was originally painted black. I don't know about the others.

      Joe,

As you can see in my photo the 69-74 shield (GM # 3959552 - 1st design) in the middle has remnants of black paint. Many years ago I cleaned the 64-68 shield (GM #3851295) on the left side in the photo and sprayed it with gray primer paint to prevent rust. I have another 64-68 shield that has remnants of black paint. The NOS 75-82 shield (GM # 3959552 - 2nd design) on the right side in the photo is just plain steel.

All the shields in my collection have the "S" overlapping the "S" logo stamped on them. I assume that there was just one supplier.

BTW, the attaching hex head screws (GM # 9420494 as shown in the 1964-1968 AIM's) that came with my 64-68 shields have a logo that looks like the small letter "L" inside a large letter "G". The 9420494 screw is also listed in the 1969 AIM.

David -- here's the double "S" overlap stamp on two shields I ordered back in June of 1986, thinking I was getting something for my C2's (327 & 396). Oh well ...
