    63 091 coil reproduction

The coil on my black car went bad last week. The car will never be judged and finding an original 091 is impossible, so I ordered a repop. I received it yesterday, in a GM Reproduction Parts box, but it seems to be wrong (apart from the stainless terminals that I knew were incorrect).

Here's the issue: When I hold the coil so I can read the "Delco Remy" logo, the plus (+) terminal is on my right. The original 091 that I have has the "+" terminal on the left.

I'm wondering if any original 091's were made this way. Anybody know?

    Thanks,

The shoulders are incorrect and the terminals should have a small holes to lock the special wire hooks. I bought one as well when they were first available. What a disappointment.

No shortage of good Delco Remy coils for your fuel car Mike. If you can't find an original 091 (big bucks) then buy a nice 64-65 coil. Hi-output and readily available on Ebay, etc.
If you are having the car judged you still get some good points as it's a Sr part. And the car will run well. Or put on an 087 like the 4th edition etc called for in old days.
If you really want to give your points some juice put on an 087 with the D1111 Ballast resistor. You see a 087 should have a D1110.
So the repro + and - are mixed up too. I see old Doc Mike registered that point big time. Very funny. JD

The 091 that went bad was already a repop. Its about four years old, but it has the terminals correctly oriented. I didn't get that one at the same vendor as this new one, but it was also a GM Reproduction Parts labeled part.

It seems clear that there are several different versions of the repop 091 out there. None of them will pass judging though, as they all have stainless steel or brass terminals.

            Michael,

I agree with John in that a nice NOS Delco 202 coil will work very well on your car. After that I would go to NAPA and get a IC12 coil before I purchased any reproduction electrical part, I too have heard of these reproduction coils failing.

Coil story concerning my 63, the LWC. In early 80's I went to Chevy and bought a new coil for my 63. Ended up with a 202. Don't know how it was listed in their catalog but that's the coil I got. So my old 091 was sitting on my shelf for 15 plus years or so when along came a well known NCRS member who stopped at my shack to look at the cars, etc. Offered me a whopping $65.00 for the coil and then left. Old JD wasn't smart enough at the time to know how valuable the coil was/is.
So if you are looking in (every day) you know who you are. True story.

I can use this repop coil as is, the Delco Remy logo location doesn't matter on this car. I just need to turn it around so the distributor lead is long enough.

I just don't understand why someone would go to the trouble of reproducing a part so badly. If you're going to go to the trouble of stamping 091 on the can, how tough would it be to use the old coil top as a mold for the new top? Somebody consciously changed the +/- terminals order. Why?

i thought 63 coils used the retangular shoulders to hold the rectangular washer and did not have the small holes. the earlier 091 coils had holes because there were no rectangular shoulders. the earlier style 091 coils that i have purchased recently have the 091 on the bottom, have the correct holes on top, do not have stainless terminals and have the positive terminal on the left side.

Probably misread the drawing, as in reading right to left.

I believe the coil pictured is a service replacement.
The original coil did not have the shoulder on the center tower.

Bruce, This is not the early design 091, its a 1963 model coil, I think its pretty well documented that the shoulders were added to the 091 sometime after May of 1962, when the new retaining clip was designed.
