I have a 64 coupe L76 4 speed. It does not have matching #'s motor or drive line. The rear end and trans that are in the car are out of a 69 and has 3.70 gears. I am rebuilding everything and this is where I have a question. I would like some opinions on what gears I mite want in the car? I am planing on driving this car locally and some cruising, I won't be taking the car to the drag strip every weekend but don't want some of these kids in there hopped up rice burners beating me on the occasional light to light on a friday night! thanks

Re: Rear End Gears
A 3.70 ratio is about low as one would want and still be able to cruise on the interstate and have nice take off power on the street. A 4.ll will tach 35-3600 (dependent on tire size) at 60 mph, for me a bit much however they're killer on the street. I run a 3.55 in my '66 crusing comfortably on the interstate but lose some thrust on take off. "Pick your poison".....any gear selection wil have it's detriment or advantage.
Unfortunately some of these "rice burners" will put our old technology to shame!- Top

Re: Rear End Gears
I wouldn't worry about those "ricers" because you'll get your butt kicked no matter what gears you choose. Get the gears that will satisfy the type of driving you'll be doing most. Oh, my neighbors son has a slightly modified Mitsubishi Evo with a fart tip exhaust that drives me crazy. It will run mid 12's all day long. Most of his buddy's ricers are much faster, in the 11's, but they're highly modified. No old Corvette is going to come close to those. Besides, street racing is a no-no.- Top
