    Windshield Wiper Related Questions

What is the correct color for the wiper transmission assemblies on my 69. I haven't removed them yet, but they appear to be cast aluminum and are original. Currently they appear to be the typical dull, tarnished aluminum color, but may have been painted dark grey.

Also, what is the correct finish and color of the wiper area? Mine appears to have a thin asphalt-based coating as you might find in some undercoated areas.

I don't see these topics addressed in the judging guide.

    Thanks,
    Mike

If you have a thin asphalt like coating in your wiper recess area your car missed something. Usually there is a whole lot of that coating in there and it covers the base of the wiper transmission assemblies. That whole area was painted black during the engine compartment black-out operation, as was the A-pillars. What I don't know is if the wiper transmission mounts were installed before black-out or after. I also don't know if the asphalt like coating was installed before or after black-out. I am sure the asphalt was installed after the wiper transmission mounts because we see it covering the bolts for the mounts and it was supposed to seal any water leaks in this area, so sealing the mount fasteners would mean it has to come after the wiper mount install.. Some of the guys who routinely judge exterior will have more to say, as will those who frequently disassemble Corvettes.

The wiper transmission is natural cast aluminum. The wiper area is blacked out asphalt sealer. If you over clean it you will find the original body color underneath.

I might have a terminology issue. The photo you show is not what I would call the wiper transmission. The posts that the wiper arms mount to are, I believe, the wiper transmissions.

Terry, I agree with your understanding of the terminology. My wiper transmissions are mostly natural aluminum with a fair amount of asphalt overspray.
