    67' black interior tone color

Looking for assistance on what others have used for the tone of black on the interior of the car. Is it best to paint or dye (if a dye is it wiped on with a cloth) the dashboard and what manufacture of black paint matches it best? Also what black tone paint is best for the console, back of seats, etc. Dave

The main fiberglass dash panel, interior moldings, halo panel, etc. were spray-painted with exterior lacquer, and NOT buffed. SEM #39143 Trim Black is a good match for use on the cluster, glove box door, steering column, wheel hub, and shifter console plate.

John is right. There is also a euro trim black that is just a little more glossy. The main fiberglass dash panel had paint that was originally more chalky (not deep black). I used the trim black recently and stayed off the heay paint on the dash. It came out real nice. The PPG interior paint that matches the code is no longer available. Mix them up. I have had a couple of unrestored cars and it is amazing how the paints didn't match each other.

        Dave,

I agree with John, for black interior on a 67, SEM 39143 is the way to go. My NAPA store in a small town in N CA stocks it.

Just the right sheen for a 67. I've used it on the dash, glove box, black console, engine compartment blackout, frame touchups and exterior mouldings below the door on my 67.

Great stuff, take a look at this post:

I think it has just the right sheen, semi-flat to semi-gloss.

I've seen quite a few restored 67's where the interior black is just too glossy.

Valspar satin black also looks just as good. It is available at Lowes and less than 5 bucks a can.

No. It will just thicken the paint layers and you'll loose detail.

John, I'm getting ready to do my interior and I want to be sure I understand before I start. I had the cluster professionally rebuilt and they used Krylon semi flat black so I think its best to stick with this so everything matches. I plan on using it on the dash panel, shifter console plate, emergency brake cover, back panel of both seats, glove box door, and steering column. I was also wondering about the visors?? FYI: It is a convertible 427/390. Any advice is appreciated. THX Dave

                  Dave,
on the visors, seats, dash or anything vinyl requiring dye, use the Corvette America dye in your interior color followed with the CA Satin Clear. I found this method mimics original new finish pretty closely. Just finished my 67 with his method.

Tom, Do you rub the dye on with a cloth; how is it applied? Also the center part of the dash where the radio is is fiberglass how did you deal with that area? Also what do you mean by followed with the CA satin clear? Just trying to clarify; I don't want to screw this up. Thx Dave

Dave, Corvette America's Interior Dye is like a paint that comes in qts or rattle cans. You spray the center console/dash area with the black dye then apply the satin clear they recommend over it. It gives a very smooth two-stage finish that I thought matched up perfectly with an untouched part. Be sure to lightly scuff first with a scotch brite and fill any holes. Use SEM prep sol first to clean.
