1963 Engine Assy Stamp

At first glance block looks like it was decked so the numbers are faint. The number is FI028RE. The Car is a Nov Build date so a late Oct engine assy is OK. My question is with the I. Is it possible the I is used as 1?

Yes, it was done more than not. I am right there in your time frame too. Mine reads FI029RF. I have seen as many as three "I" and no "1"
Can I ask your casting date. Mine is "J 23 2"

The engine plants were directed by Chevrolet Engineering to use the "I" character in place of the "1" character on the pad stamp back in 1957.
