    UA6 Audio alarm questions

Several questions about UA6 alarms for 71:
Is the horn dated in any way?
Is the key number stamped on the exterior of the lock assembly, like it is stamped on the door and storage locks?
Is the reinforcement plate the horn bolt bolts to on every car inner fender, or just UA6 equipped?
The 70-72 JG is silent on these questions--only talks about the lock, the key, the wiring, relays, and flasher, as far as I have found. ( I certainly could have missed some, too)

    Mike,
Yes the horn is dated, and has a stamped part number as well -- just like the ones in the front of the car (of course nto the same number). Difference is that these stampings can not be seen when the horn is installed, and as a result we do not judge them. Thus there has been no motivation on the part of the Judging Manual Revision Team to do the research necessary to document this data.
No key number on the lock assembly. There is a number on the key, but I am not aware of its significance.
I am pretty sure the reinforcing plate is only on UA6 equipped cars. If you have an AIM the UA6 section may show a part number for the plate.

      Mike,
On my 72, the door locks did not have the code on the outside, but are on the ignition switch. The alarm lock did not have a code, but the code on the storage lock worked on the alarm lock. You have to take the storage lock apart to see the code, the code is on the lock cylinder, not on the outside.

        Mike M,

Now you woke me up. Rev Mike was asking about his 1971, and I gave him a 1970 answer. For 1971 the numbers on the keys are the code for them. I would have expected the code numbers to be on all originally installed lock cylinders for all three years, but I will defer to those of you who have looked, and to those who dabble in keys and locks.

Terry - Sometime in the 70s Briggs & Stratton stopped stamping the KEY #s on the original production door lock cases & it sounds like it was in 1972. Fortunately, they kept stamping the KEY #s on the original lock cylinders of the original rear compartment lock assemblies for awhile but that like many other things came to an end also, but I can't tell you when exactly. That is why I said: "I will defer to those of you who have looked, and to those who dabble in keys and locks."

Too bad for those folks who have mismatched locks/keys or no keys. It was not uncommon back then for nefarious individuals to use a slide puller to remove the lock from the passenger door, get a key made from the code, and drive off with the car. That is why the door key changed to the oval key at some point. I suppose the lock stamps fell to the sharp pencils of the bean counters. I am aware of one 1972 that was never delivered with the storage compartment/spare tire key. When it came to judging I believe you produced the round key from the numbers on the storage compartment. This was a fairly late car so based on that sample of one those storage compartment numbers went well into 1972.
