    70 LS-5 BB Water Pump Bolts w/ A/C & P/S

Help! 70 BB w/ A/C & P/S-engine was in buckets, so not sure what is correct or if I have all the fasteners and TIM & JG & pictures in restro books not helping much. On all early BB, I have seen (none with this option combo) the top RH bolt on the water pump is a stud, which does not seem to ever be used for attaching anything to. However, on this 70, that same type stud is used on the top LH side for one of the alternator brackets; unique, when equipped w/ P/S; than another longer stud is used bottom LH for the idler when optioned w/ P/S. For this application; would you expect to still see the stud on the RH top, installed and painted at engine plant? I would assume the RH top stud would have been installed & painted at Tanawanda, but the studs on the LH side were installed at St. Louis (based on options), therefore not painted. Pictures/drawings in the AIM under C-60 do not have the stud on top RH. So, was the normally Tanawanda installed stud, then removed when option C-60 was applied, and therefore, the replacement bolt would be un-painted: and if so, was it cad or phosphate?
On a similar note: when equipped with A/C, there were 2 vac advance steel lines, hooked to the Spark Control Solenoid. These lines are held by a single clip that had double line provision (2 springs jaws), were as the 71 model used a single line and 2 single line provision clips. Would the attaching bolt holding the clip (one of the intake manifold bolts) have been replaced in St. Louis due to option and therefore it would be un-painted-cad or phosphate? ALSO: does anyone know where I can find one of these double line provision clips???????????????????????????

I have some thoughts on the stud issue, but last time I posted about BB water pump studs I wound up putting my foot in you know where; so this time I will hold my piece – or hold something.

The double vacuum clip for 1971 was installed at Tonawanda and painted, sometimes not very well, with the engine. I don't think the vacuum lines differed with A/C in either 1970 or 1971 or 1972 because steel pipes these are all for the TCS system (although one goes to the distributor vacuum advance unit), and there is no engine compartment vacuum changes that I can recall due to C60. Best of my recollection, without the AIM at hand, is that 1970 had a single steel line ( + another rubber line that goes to the top rear of the carburetor) and only a single clip held by the intake manifold bolt.

      Terry-
In further review of the AIM, I believe you are correct-all BB would have the TCS, which then brings up the question: was the stud that secures the solenoid installed in Tanawanda (therefore painted) or St. Louis/unpainted?
It is my understanding on the clip and steel vac lines: 70 BB used 2 steel lines w/one double spring clip, 71-72 BB used a single steel line, but had 2 clips (single spring)-Doc Rebuild has some excellent drawings of each-the 70 agrees w/ AIM. Based on re-checking the archieves, it appears your opinion is that the clip was installed and painted at the engine factory-correct?
On the water pump fasteners: I changed my search in the archives and found some answers/opinions of several applications, and I believe I agree with the studs on the LH (driver's side) w/ P/S would have been installed at St. Louis, therefore, no paint-same for the lower stud for the idler. However; in none of the threads was the stud on the RH side really addressed. The closest I saw was that this stud's intended use was to mount the AIR pump if required. So, what is your opinion in my application w/ A/C and no pump-would you expect to see the stud? And if not, I have to assume it was replaced on the line and the fastener would be unpainted-I believe phosphate. Paragon's W/P kit for BB w AC & PS has the 2 studs I had to use on the LH side & 2 hex bolts, which I used on the RH, indicating no stud on the top RH(they may or may not be correct)-your thoughts, or anyone else's-please.
      Thanks,
      Mike

        Mike,

It appears I may have been wrong about the two pipes on 1970 LS5. Now that I am home I can search my photo files. They work much better than my memory. Be happy:

You can determine from your copy of the AIM if the clip and stud were installed at St Louis or at the engine plant. Any item that has a part number in the AIM was installed at St Louis. You do have to be thorough in that sometimes the parts are not shown in the illustration we would think.

WOW!-it is true a picture specks a 1000 words. You can not imagine the time I have spent trying to figure out what this photo shows in 30 seconds of review. And your tip regarding the P/N (installed in St. Louis)-who would have know, but an experienced intellectual enthusiest, such as yourself-thanks for all the help, always.
Don't suppose you have a pic of the water pump fasteners when equipped with AC & PS???????????????????

Mike, unfortunately as I remember this car was not so equipped. This is as close as I got:
