Re: 68 engine code ID problem

Now you are throwing in "HD"
Everything points to everything seeming to fit. The assembly date on the block of December 1st of 1967 makes sense with the heads having a 67 date on them.

Why did this change from "HP" to "HD". We are willing to help, but you cannot keep changing the information on us.

Check to see if the firewall has an evaporator hanging off of it. It is pretty simple.

Now you are saying it is an "HD" on the block

On second thought. "HD" is in fact a 67 code. I think it is time to get the casting number and casting date off the block. They are on the back flange of the engine. How early in 67 are the heads dated?

Again, the more information you can get us the better. Getting the casting date off the back passenger side flange will tell us a ton. It will be a letter and a few numbers. It is very common to have the casting date end in 7 because they started the next model year in September of each year.

For example: My 63 was built on November 8th of 62 and it has a casting date of "J 23 2" on the block. It stands for October 23, 1962.

Your 68 casting number should be 3914678. If it is a 67 by chance you will have a 3892657 casting number. The "HD' just makes no sense for a real 68.

Tells us what you can. You can see these number with a flashlight, but you might need to clean off some grease to get to them.

      Best of luck.

Sorry that hd was a typo. It is "HP" I must be tired. Sorry again.

          Calvin,

If it is "HP" everything seems to fit just fine.

Dick put the codes from the new book out there. Now, it is for you to see if there is something that does not fit.

Again, my guess the 1201 is for December 1st of 67. If the vin number is in the 5700 range, everything seems to fit that it is a 350 Horsepower with A/C.

at this point that is what I would run with until something else proves it is different.

If by chance the vin number is not even close to 5700, it might be time to rethink it.

Bottom line is it seems to be the 350 with A/C.

Is there anything that is now making you think it is something different. The information Dick shared is the latest update. It shows the the earlier NCRS book was wrong. That is why they keep updating things as they find out more information.

Re: 68 engine code ID problem

            1. "HP" is the 350 horse. 2. The Stamped chrome valve covers are most likely original. 3. It is a an air car. 4. The VIN is in the low 6000. 5. Is the 1.94 291 heads correct or should they be 2.02's? 6. Is the tachometer redline at 6000 correct? Thanks, Cal
