    Loctite Strength

What is the proper strength to use on suspension parts? Red, Blue, Green....

    Thanks,
    Danny

Depends if you ever want to remove the screws again. Don't think GM ever used Loctite.

I am with Ken, if there were lock washers installed that should be fine. most corvette chassis pieces have cotter pins, lock washers, personally I would like to know that I can take something apart without removing the threads. Its almost certain that you'll have something go wrong and may need to dissemble something. I like using a anti seize compound on bolts so remove can be done years down the road.

I use lock tight on the racecar on almost everything. It does not remove threads or harm fasteners. Use a drop or two of red and torque to proper torque and your set for as long as you want.

Personally I use a lot of Loctite on fuel injections. I use several Red ones.

If I was to go to NAPA and ask for a red loctite they would give me one that is '271. The '271 is not something I would want to use on a suspension part as it would be quite difficult to take apart. I use a #545 Hydraulic sealant in several places. It's Red. I also use 242. It's red. Have some old 222 Red but don't use it anymore.
Just stating colors might get someone in trouble don't you think. JD

Green: 291 is one that I use on Choke butterfly screws as don't want the engine to swallow the screw. I also use it on other applications. But it's rather permanent and a bear to remove a screw that has 291 on.

On my eye glasses the tiny screws would come loose and you know the rest. So I use a drop of 291 on the screws. God forbid though they have to come out again.

I agree John. i use almost exclusively loctite 272 high strength High temp. If something gets loose under race conditions something bad is going to happen. However i take the entire car apart annual for inspection and have never had a problem with getting release on the bolts or any fastener damage.

                I use 242,271,272,& 638 on various parts.
242=blue- bolts I want to remove without heat
271, 272 =red Requires heat to break the bond, use on Ring Gear bolts
638 = Green. Requires heat as well and it is stronger then the red. I use it on HP builds to retain bearings

The thing with Loctite is you have to use the proper prep and allow it to setup. If you want to hold plated parts then you will have to use their primer. I did a simple test with #271, I put a drop on a 1/4-20 nut and bolt and let setup 24 hours. These were grade 8 nut & bolt. The next day I was able to break them loose without a problem. Then I went to a new ring gear mounted with ARP bolt and #271. These are steel bolts in iron holes, no primer used only cleaned with acetone. I hurt my hand trying to break them loose and stripped out the teeth in the box wrench I used. As long as you prep them and keep them away from 400* or more you are good but this stuff will loose the bond once the temp climbs on them.
