Thanks Mark. Looks like there was still quite a bit of black paint on the steering gear.

Is the yellow inspection mark on the steering box on top of or beneath the black paint? I can't tell from the pic. As I recall the inspection mark should be beneath the black paint and can be exposed as the paint wears off.

        Here's a small sample from my 65 #14790.

Correct, yellow was on before engine compartment black out was done.

Michael, the 396 car that you sold to Dave Burroughs that was later published in (I think 1981) showed some orange paint on one or both of the front spindles. The photos are in the Burroughs book. For 1965, I've seen orange, blue, white and green paint used on front spindles.

As for the steering box, others in here are right--inspection daubs were added before the steering box was painted black. From my more recent research though, I am of the belief that the steering boxes were actually painted black at Saginaw before being shipped to St. Louie. We had a good discussion several days ago about black paint on the coupler as well. If the inspection daubs appear on the steering box, it is likely due to paint simply wearing off over time as it was pretty low-quality black paint.

The photo of the differential is really impressive. I have never seen such nice paint daub preservation on a usually very rusty differential.

Great photos and thanks for sharing!

Jim, it appears that you have blackout paint on the tops of your strut rods and half shafts. Very nice photos!

                Tony,

I think I have the book here. I'll look. I do remember orange on the spindles on that car but I don't remember any other colors. I've seen some that show a few different colors in different areas of the spindle.

As I recall, the colors all appeared flat, near zero gloss.

The each of the spindles on my 65 have green daubs and 1 white and 1 orange slash mark.
