Know there are several threads on this in archives, but would like an update. What's best thread sealer for center SB intake bolts where small amounts of oil are prone to come up onto intake? Tried Permatex2 after cleaning threads;no luck. Someone said ULTRA black RTV. Any problems using this?

Re: fixing oil coming onto intake
I use a black RTV sealant made for/by Toyota which works great, I'll never use anything else.

Re: fixing oil coming onto intake
GM Thread Sealant with Teflon is great stuff but pricey. Permatex Thread Sealant with Teflon is much cheaper and works just as well. Ordinary pipe dope, if already on hand is just as good. Just be sure that the threads in the heads and the bolts are clean. Clean threads are important with any of these three, but infinitely more important with RTV silicone.- Top

Thanks for tips. Just got through using Permatex with Teflon thread sealer. Will let you know if it works.- Top

Re: fixing oil coming onto intake
I too, along with many others, have this same problem and have tried many sealers and even changed the bolts. Got to the point where I figured it's just the nature of the beast, specially with the SHP engines.

Re: fixing oil coming onto intake
Used the Permatex pipe thread sealer with "PFT"-(Teflon?). Better but can still see slight oil seepage around bottom of bolt. There is also a Permatex "high temp" Teflon thread sealer-is this better? Was afraid I couldn't have gotten threads in head clean enough to use ultra black RTV, but maybe I should give this a try if I'm OC enough to try again.(W.C. Fields said "If at first you don't succeed, try again; if it still doesn't work, the Hell with it; no need to be a damn fool.) Maybe he's right.- Top

Re: fixing oil coming onto intake
Buy some of this from Toyota for about $14 a tube, once you us it and see the results you won't use anything else. Its stopped every oil leak I've had on my engines.

Re: fixing oil coming onto intake
Not always is the oil working up the threads. Sometimes just gets under the manifold gasket and oozes out under the bolt head. Try a thin (.010" -.020") small diameter Teflon washer under bolt head. Tight fitting to bolt shaft/threads is necessary. Has to be small diameter since teflon is white and will show. Delrin may work too and is available in black. This is easier accomplished if a washer is installed under bolt head first but would not be NCRS correct.- Top

Re: fixing oil coming onto intake
I had this problem with the edelbrock intake on my 72 a lot. It wasn't because of the edelbrock but I think I used the High Temp Thread sealant or "The Right Stuff" the time I had the intake off and that fixed it. Same deal with chrome T stat covers, I had the lap the bottom, then use a thick and thin gasket and the Right Stuff again, no more leaks. Now I will probably be pulling the heads off so I'll be back to the same thing!- Top
