"COUNTING CARS" episode featuring 1963 SWC

Did anyone else see the recent episode where the cast chases down a SWC on a trailer which was headed to auction, they buy it for $45K, do some restoration and then sell it to a couple for $115K? The whole thing seems pretty improbable, the car was presented as a complete survivor with numbers matching engine and trans.. The engine appeared to have the finned valve covers but with the 250/300 horse air cleaner. No mention was made of unique options or history. If anyone knows the background story on this car I would love to hear it. Seems like more fiction than fact.

I actually enjoy the show. No doubt each episode has been edited down from weeks or maybe even months of shooting and they are working on several cars at one time. I also believe that the finds are staged. As for the 63, the guy they stopped said his uncle was the original owner of the car. It appeared to be a base motor car that had finned valve covers added. No foul there. Everyone did it back then. In the shot where the body was stripped there were suspension parts hanging from a rack painted a high-gloss black. It's hard to tell how thorough the restoration was. The final color was too light and had too much metallic. I think you could buy a fuel injection car for that much money. I mean a frame on not properly restored car.

Reminds me of a show a few years back where the wife had a 63 split window in the garage covered with boxes of junk. The husband arranges for the car to be "stolen" and in 7 days, not months days, they do a complete body off restoration. Then surprise the woman with the done car. Only on TV people only on TV!! Counting cars is about as far fetched!

Recent show on Velocity had some british fellow reworking an Edelbrock (AFB) carburetor to lean it out for an emissions test in England. He even changed the secondary jets and never touched the primary metering rods, Duh!

Most of these shows are pure fantasy when it comes to the prices they throw around. A lot of the shows do alright with the purchase price of the project but expect us to believe that someone will pay extraordinary prices when it's done, even on a face-to-face sale. Counting Cars and American Pickers are the worst. Texas Car Wars is closer to reality. Car Chasers, Fast n' Loud, and Pawn Stars, are OK, but they still have their moments of B.S.

True, alot of BS on the "reality???" shows. A true story and if I had noot been somewhat involved I would not believe it: About 1994 a friend and fellow from work brought an ad from "The Green Sheet" into my office. It stated 1959 Corvette, will trade for Roto-Tiller. Ronny told me he was going that evening to look at the car. The next morning he came into my office shaking his head. He looked at the car, parked outside at a gas station. It was a real two top Corvette. It ran, needed paint and interior but was in very good shape although it had a 327 installed. He spoke to the attendant and was told it belonged to a fellow and his wife, the guy died and the widow was selling. Ronny spoke with the widow. The woman had no idea of the value but wanted a tiller for her garden. Ronny told her he would buy her a new tiller of her choice and she said thanks but had another tiller offer and told the guy he had first dibs. Ronny threw in an additional $500, she thought and said she could not go back on her word. The next day Ronny went by the station after work and stopped to talk to a fellow loading the Corvette on a trailer. He traded a used tiller for the '59.

"They're still out there!" Not the barn finds, but the suckers that will pay big money for an incorrect car. I also noticed the wrong color paint job; did anyone else notice the chromed hood prop in one of the last scenes? Seems our friend Danny threw in a little something extra.

I got a kick out of the American Pickers where they are picking through a bunch of auto parts and Frank comes across a carb. He says that it's a carb from a '58 Corvette with a tri- carb set up! They then proceed to find a steering wheel that they think belongs to a '66 Corvette....clearly a passenger car steering wheel. Anyone else see that episode?

I posted a while back about that episode. What a joke. I think the steering wheel was off something like a 70's Plymouth.
