    Re: 1968 AC drier question

We all know that if you went into the dealership and ordered a RC15 Radiator cap a few years later - the part number was the same, but the cap in the box was very different - And those 15 inch trim rings I bought in 1982 which are still in GM boxes are using the old 1967 part numbers, but they are certainly not using the same attaching clips. the parts were frequently redesigned and the same part number was used.

Now if the system for Corvette was redesigned in 68, and in fact the Evap and Cond fittings were different sizes -
then YES- the part number would absolutely change... because the 69 drier won't work on the 67 cars.

Seems Corvette was redesigned earlier, makes sense actually, because the whole car was redesigned in 68.

But remember --- all the other GM models used the earlier style drier until 1969.

What do the judges say? Is the window in the center or offset for 1968? Are the in and out fittings both the same in 68, or are they like the 69 fittings, which are 2 different sizes?

Russ sent me a picture of the drier on his car - said it had never been changed...
the paint configuration and markings look absolutely original - an over-the-counter part would not be painted like that,
so I am starting to believe him...

However his viewing window is offset to the side - someone said the judging manual read window was in center?
Can anyone confirm... what version is your NCRS manual?

yes it is - I can't believe all these 68 guys don't have one?
it is one of the most important sources you can have....
I have all the latest midyears NCRS manuals here, I was never concerned much for the sharks.

I still have a t-shirt I bought in 1977 At Bloomington (although it only fits my wife now)
it reads " Sure they made a Corvette after 1967... but who cares" LOL - - sorry guys....

my 68 judging guide is very old. I thought I already knew everything -LOL --- I sent Russ a drier for his 68. he is returning it because it is a 64-67 drier apparently?

          Jeff:

Another possibility is a "running change" during the 1968 model year, so that the early cars had one configuration (1967) and mid and later cars had a different (1969) configuration. I believe that the 1968 model Corvette was known for having many "running changes".

FWIW.....My old AC Delco Spec Manual shows #15-1244 receiver drier for 1963 to 1967. Thread 5/8-18 for both sides of the drier. The manual shows #15-1240 receiver/drier for 1968 to 1973. Thread 11/16-16 on the inlet and Thread 5/8-18 on the outlet. The AC Delco Manual also indicates that both of these connections are No. 6 (One a Regular No. 6 with 3/8 inch tubing and one a Special GM No. 6 with 3/8 inch tubing.....but with a different head size and thread count.)

When we were in the parts business we sold the 15-1240 for '68'72 Believe it still it had the coke bottle top configuration. I know towards the end of the parts business, 2000, the configuration had changed on the replacements

              Re: 1968 AC drier question

the biggest factor is the thread size -- if the fittings are different in 68, then that would clinch it for me -- 68 would need to use the 69 style drier.
There was never an early style with different fitting connections.

63 is the same as 64-67 except in 63 stamping was "IN /OUT" rather then the "EVAP/ COND" wording for 64-72

I don't know what happened to my add on reply. Anyway, I went out to the car and checked the size of the drier threads and the one going out the front and down to condenser is larger than the one going aft and towards the evap. Jeff, you are correct on Paragon it looks like they do use the same for C2 and 68-72 but the C/C driers look like to be the correct shapes.

Here is a photo of an NORS service replacement I bought for my '69. Date on parts inventory tag is 5/25/93. Part #15-1240; 3046236. Top says "EVAP" on short side and "COND" on long on top.
