    1972 convert engine pad question

I have just looked at a beautiful red 72 air convert. the engine pad stamping is as follows:
12sxxxxxx (the last 6 numbers match the vin on the window plate but I don't understand the "1" before the 2S.
the other number on the block seems to be VD923ckw.
this car is a 4 speed convert base engine with PS not PB.
Can anyone help with the decoding of the engine stamping?
    Thanks for the help.
    Joe

Re: 1972 convert engine pad question

just found out one of the engine cylinders was re-sleaved several years ago.
How concerned should I be - car seems to run just fine, does not burn oil and no sign of leakes.
    Thanks again
    Joe

The VIN stamping with 12SXXXXXX is normal for a 1972. The Date and Suffix code should read V0923CKW or Flint Sept 23 day 350CI/300HP 4-speed

The 1 at the beginning of the VIN derivative is normal for a '72. The other stamp probably reads V0923CKW. That translates to an engine built in the Flint MI engine plant on Sept. 23, base engine with 4 speed trans,

One other thing, I'm guessing the "2" is, and should be a "Z".

Yes. The engine code and suffix identify the engine. The VIN derivitive stamp identifies the car in which the engine was originally installed.
