    1969 turbo 400 tranny markings

    im cleaning up the orignal trans[turbo 400] to my 1969 427/400hp conv,,in cleaning the trans case,i found

    1.2 white paint dab/stripes on the right upper side near the tailshaft housing just behind the yellow id tag
    2.a stenciled ''c'' on the right bellhousing just in front of the 2 trans cooler lines

    ive never seen anything writen about these

    Those are inspection markings that were applied to the case at various stages in the transmission manufacturing plant; nobody knows 40+ years later what they signified.

      John,
      Could the C be a broadcast code? I would expect a CY stenciled on the HD TH400.
      It would be nice to see a picture of these features so one might be better able to make a SWAG.

        i'll get a few pics,there real faint,and i still cant find the stamped vin in the case rail or bellhousing,its on the yellow trans tag

          The stamped VIN derivative should be on the driver's side case, just above the pan rail a couple of inches in front of the selector shaft. If the trans is installed in the car the stamp is usually hidden by the bellows at the transmission end of the gear shift cable.

            Are you sure it isn't a "CL" and not just a "C"? That's the code for the common THM 400. It's a moot point for judging but I thought it would look good before the body went on so I stenciled mine back on.
