    *** '68 question ***

My early '68 has a molded (ribbed on the backside) plastic rear center compartment door along with the 2 outer fiberboard doors. Was this a one year only set-up? When was the change to all 3 doors being made of plastic? I desperately need a center door and having been looking for a long time. They are hard to find. Thanks.

My 1968 original owner convertible came from the factory with a plastic rear center glove box compartment door. I disconnected the light switch power wire more than 30 years ago so the light does not operate and become a drain on the battery. My 68 was built in FEB. Do not know if the plastic glove box compartment door was used throughout the 68 model year. My 1970 Corvette does not have a plastic rear center glove box door.

      Thanks Jim,

My Nov '67 built Vette has the plastic door also but it has a crude repair (previous owner) at the hinge area (crack repaired with clear epoxy - ugly). I also noticed on my original, on the ribbed backside, there is a slight wave to it. Looks like a slight heat source was applied to it. Would this have been caused by the courtesy light in the glove box???

      Regards, Blair K.

The judging guide indicates the plastic doors were changed to a Masonite door on cars built after 15 Jan 68 because the plastic doors tended to warp from heat. My June build has the Masonite doors

I am pretty sure there is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) on this subject printed in the 4th Edition of the 1968-69 TIM&JG. You might find an answer there -- at the risk of also finding more questions.

Blair - I've been able to obtain some hard-to-find 68 parts from J.T. Piper, might have some luck if you try him.

I'm almost positive the warpage was due to the spring force loading upward on the closed door. I store my early 68 with the door open to avoid the added warpage.
