    1967 SB BB starter differences

    Hello All,

I'm going to replace my starter on my '67 SB (L79) but prefer the high-torque version over the standard starter. At this time the starter only needs to be functional as I will restore the original number matching one later.

AC Delco 323-364 (GM # 10496870) is listed as a high-torque starter for BB and I was told it will work on my SB and would like to be sure of this. Could someone confirm this for me? THANK YOU in advance.

    Kurt,
The BB starter has a different head VS the small block. The BB head is also cast iron where the SB is cast aluminum.
I think the flywheel size is also bigger on the BB than the non highperformance SB.
The mounting is also different I believe.

      Hi Domenic,

Thanks for your reply. I since did some further checking and 323-364 shows it as a BB starter, and some later 350 HD applications, so still not sure of what I need. Does anyone know what Delco number I need for a high-torque starter for a SB?

I see a # 336-1847 and it's listed as a 1.5 kW but not sure if that's high torque or not.....

        Kurt,

Why waste your $$, just overhaul the original and reinstall, they are very simple to do or have a local rebuilder go through it. If you have a original solenoid reuse it if it tests OK.

          Hi Timothy,

I do plan to have the original rebuild, but want to have something for the interim - and then keep it as a spare as I have two cars.

Masters City (John Pirkle's son) can build you one. Don't know about turnaround time, or if he has one already on the shelf that you could exchange.

They did one for me a few years back, and it made a significant difference in starting.....especially when the engine is very hot. They put additional fields etc into the SB case, so the modification is not detectable until you hit the switch. The starter sound is a bit different, but it cranks with a LOT more gusto.

              Kurt,
Even if you change the BB starter nose to an aluminum SB one the starter will be too long, about 3/4" so the front sheet metal support will not match up to mount it to the side of the block. Not a good idea to go unsupported on the front of the starter. A bigger flywheel gives the multiplication factor to increase starter torque. Why do you think you need more torque to start your SB?

                Hi Kurt,
These 1107320 starters used a 1955937 armature and a 1935128 field coil (3 coils) with a 1935131 shunt coil. This set up was used to crank 409 and 427 "W" motors in the early 1962-63 area. Agree with Gene, I don't think it is worth the effort.

The 65 396 starter and the L88 starter are high torque starters for the 327 size flywheel. No need to build something custom.
