Re: Memorial Day
Thanks George! Hope all is well up north with you. A surprising thing happened to me. I was contacted by a fellow who I was in the 434th Spl. Ops. with, later we worked for DoD and then another Govt. agency. I hadn't seen or heard from him for years and was surprised to learn Mike lives about 90 miles from me! As usual I am flying five flags for five special men today. Unfortunately I did not see that many residential flags flying today. Steve- Top

Re: Memorial Day
It's sad that a lot of people have forgotten the true meaning of Memorial day. I served for 20 years in the Air Force and now work for a government agency and I spend most of my time in the crap-holes of the world. Below is a post I placed on a popular social network which I feel drives home what most of our society has come to. To the NCRS members and their family members who have served, who continue to serve and to those who have lost friends and loved ones protecting our freedoms, I salute you!
As I scan through FB I see two types of postings. Postings of BBQs, recipes and long weekend get-a-ways from people who have forgotten or really never knew what Memorial Day is about. Then I see postings from our brothers and sisters. There are no mentions of BBQs, recipes or a long weekend. Instead “our” postings focus on the true meaning of Memorial Day, to honor those who have served, those who continue to serve and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms of our great nation. This weekend I will raise a glass, but not to recognize a great hamburger or an awesome hotdog, but to honor and respect all who have served, those who continue to serve and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Happy Memorial Day my brothers and sisters!!!!There are two kinds of friends; the friend you call to bail you out of jail and the friend sitting next to you in the cell saying "Damn, that was great"!!!- Top

Re: Memorial Day
Steve - VA is great, unfortunately I’m back in the Middle East for another year. Three months down and nine to go! I’ll be back to the U.S. in July for a few weeks and plan on spending a few days at the National Convention. There are two kinds of friends; the friend you call to bail you out of jail and the friend sitting next to you in the cell saying "Damn, that was great"!!!- Top

Re: Memorial Day
Tony, you need to start buying lottery tickets! Hope all goes well. I have a friend who is back from Afghanistan and hopes he can stay here for awhile. Don says money is good and climate sucks. Best of luck. Steve- Top

Re: Memorial Day
Six foot tall and bullet proof is what we all thought when we were young, invincible and over there.
Now I refer to that period in my life spent in crap hole locations as young and dumb.
We were the lucky ones. My thoughts and prayers go out to those who gave all.
As Dick Winters so appropriately said “I was privileged to serve with heroes”. The heroes I knew, their names were finally etched into the wall.
Thanks to all who have served and will serve.

Re: Memorial Day
Back when so many of us served we did not know that we were with heros. We just knew that we were doing what we had to do for our country. It really hits home when you see those names on the wall and realise that you were there and could have been one of the names etched in the wall.
My thanks also to all who served and continue to serve today,

Re: Memorial Day
Hi Tom! On Veterans' Day and Memorial Day I always think of John Smith, Rex Vogelpohl (next door neighbor) and Everett Davis (the joker in my class). And, thank YOU for your service. Heck of a way to get an all expense paid vacation in an exotic land-huh? Steve- Top
