    70-72 Harmonic Balancer Paint Question

About to paint the LS-5 out of my 70. The TIMTJ indicates: "The timing tab was masked before painting as was the center of the harmonic balancer...." I understand making the timing tab, but what is meant by "the center of the harmonic balancer"??? Do they mean where the pulley mounts on the front or are they talking about the timing mark on the balancer. Either area, what is the margin i.e., say a 1/4" masking tape over the length of the timing mark?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Where the pulley mounts to the balancer was masked because a run of paint could make the pulley run unevenly creating unwanted vibrations and belt alignment issues.

The timing tab was masked to keep the individual degree marks visible. Of course there would be a shadow created by the timing tab on the balancer. I remember one engine hanging on the travel chain photo posted by someone on here that showed a device that fit over the water pump pulley and extended to the timing tab that masked both.

Re: 70-72 Harmonic Balancer Paint Question

I'll tag on to this thread with a similar question.

On the Mechanical portion of the Judges Scoring Sheet -Harmonic Damper the Judge wrote, "No masked off timing mark". My car is a 70 L-46, the timing tab is masked off (unpainted). Where in the 1970-72 TIMJG does it talk about a masked off timing mark on the harmonic damper? I don't see anything on Pg. 66 Timing Tab or Pg. 84 Harmonic Damper.

      TIA,
      Mike

The timing mark on the balancer ring was not masked off in any way.

Joe is absolutely right, and that is why it is not mentioned in the TIM&JG. I believe that judge misunderstood the paint description in the Judging Guide. The front of the balancer was masked, where the pulley bolts on. You wouldn't want a run of paint under the pulley, would you? Some part of the outer ring will not be covered with paint because it was under the timing tab during the painting operation. Perhaps that is what the judge meant, but few would take the time to try and find that bare spot since there is no telling where the engine wold stop before judging.
