No, I would assume GM just wanted the seam to be not visible as one looked at the rear of the car. Nothing more than that.

So GM thought it couldn't be seen at the 7 o'clock position, but it could at 6 o'clock? By looking inside the pipe? Or outside? After the inside is coated with carbon, I doubt one could see it by looking inside. And then it seems more likely to me that looking at the outside, it would be more visible at 7 o'clock, instead of 6. I'm a bit skeptical of the visualization reason.

Hi Gary,
I just think GM was only concerned with the outside surface of the tips. The inside would soon be black due to carbon. That's why the seam is positioned 30 degrees plus and minus of the 6 0'clock position, so it's on the bottom somewhere out of reasonable vision. Nothing more than that, pure "looks good".
