    Phil,

The 61-62 Judging Guide indicates the following.

.........bolts to the upper left hand inner fender panel by a metal weld nut plate riveted inside the wheelhouse (lower air cleaner bracket mounts at inner fender with nuts and bolts, no weld nut plate used). Fasteners attaching air cleaner to inner fender are dished hex head self tapping sheet metal screws with separate attached flat washer.

I don't have any notes to indicate a specific headmark.

    Dennis

Thanks Dennis I think they did use pointed sheet metal first and then used a machine next but I am looking for the head marking as the manual doesn't tell. Thanks Phil 8063

The head marking ( and type, there are two) guidance will be outlined in the revised JM coming out at the end of the year.

The upper is most often an M with an I right in the center of it. I've also seen three concentric circles , sometimes with a faint E in it. For the lowers, often an E, occasionally a TR or RBW
          Hope that's helpful.

That's not it, I just don't know what the JM will say.

Phil, Are the bolts 1/4 x 1/2 course thread? IS the lower TR, E or RBW a grade 5 bolt like the top bolts? Are the bolts flat heads? JD

Sorry to be slow with this. I intended to check the bolts several days ago and post it. I believe that these have never been off my '62. The top ones are recessed head with the M, recessed in the middle and a 1 on top almost like a flagpole. They are coarse thread pointed, like a self tapping. The bottom 2 are flat head 1/4 X 20 and have an A in the middle with nuts and washers on the back side (wheel side).

DO YOU HAVE A PHOTO OF THE ''MOUNTING PLATE'' Under the fender? FACTORY plate. A good friend is trying to buy a 62 FI car now, and I told him about the plate on all 58-62 FI cars. And how the FACTORY molded the plates into the inner fender when the car was assembled.. He needs to see an example to understand.

                        Jim,
The plates were riveted rather than molded. 61-62 had a single center rivet. That is why original air cleaners have a bend in the center--they bent slightly when tightened to the bracket with bolts through the holes on each side of that rivet.

The car is up on one of my lifts with another one under it and 2 in front, so this was the best I could do standing on a stool.

This refreshes my memory on how neglected the poor ole' '62 has been. I've had it for well over 10 years and haven't done anything to it. No damage and I stripped the original paint, and it just sits. Probably about time it gets some love. Problem with too many projects is it's too easy to move on to another one over minor hurdles or dreads.
