67 parking brake handle slider

Hi..Im doing a parking brake console restoration and is it correct that when you pull the handle up you will see a hole because you have to trim the black flexible "slider" so the handle will retract? Seems odd...yet before posting this I inspected a couple of cars and one had the hole...one didnt. Is there a "trick" to making this work without cutting so much off the slider you end up with a hole when the parking brake handle is pulled up?...thanks,Greg

Greg, my original with PW has the hole as you describe when the handle is pulled up. Unsightly, but that's the way they came.
