    57 wiper motor judging issues

I am original owner of E57S102247 with option 109 W/S washer. I encountered two issues at the recent SE Regional at Bowling Green that I hope some Master Judges would explore and resolve for me.

    1. My wiper motor No. is 5047988, half way between the two accepted numbers 5047984 and 5047991 in the judging manual. Is there any process by which this no, can be accepted ? I know this motor is original to car;what kind of documentation is required? Isn't it logical that this no. represents a design iteration on the way to the final design for a revised park position? This is a common type of confusion that I worked to resolve as a production engineer on the passenger, truck and corvette assy. lines at St. Louis; that occurred in a running design change within a model year.

    2. I don't believe that the last phrase in Operations item 8 of the 4th or 5th edition of the judging manual is correct, where it states that the motor will return the wipers to the park position when the pump pedal is released. When the pump pedal is depressed ,the cable pushes the slider switch to the hi speed position, where it stays held by the friction of the knob cable until it is returned by the dash knob. There is no internal spring in the motor switch, if there were you could not turn the wipers on with the knob to stay on. The slide block on the end of the pedal cable sheath allows the pedal to return for another pump stroke by allowing the cable sheath to slide forward but has no connection to pull the switch back to the park position.

    Thank you, Frank Bloemke (43434)

Vinnie, I incorrectly titled my concerns as "judging issues", I think the judging was done correctly by honoring current info in the manual. What I'm really asking is there any process within NCRS to document exceptions or initiate corrections to the judging manuals?

I am thinking that 5047988 is a passenger car wiper motor. I seem to recall that the number ranges of these things is not unique to a vehicle type. By that I mean that because 984 was a Corvette application, and 991 was a Corvette application, that all numbers in between are not necessarily Corvette applications.

          Frank,

As Vinnie recommended, changes are affected through the 1956-57 Team Leader John St.Peter.

With that being said Chevrolet documentation shows the following:
          1957 Passenger Car - 1st series 50477981, 2nd Series 5047988
          1957 Truck - 5047982, 2nd series 5047989
          1957 Corvette - 1st series 5047984, 2nd Series 5047991

The 1957 Corvette and Passenger car wiper motors were the new "slow park" wiper motors.

Reference the 1956-7 Owners Manual(s) on page 7 - "Pressure on this button (talking about a push button in the knob which is what the passenger cars had, but the function is the same with the foot pump) will cause a quantity of water to be squirted onto each side of the windshield. At the same time the windshield wipers will automatically start and will continue to operate for sufficient time to wipe the windshield clean and dry". Literally this means they operate for a approximately three swipes and shut off. Check AIM Section 109 Sheet 1 for an illustration of the foot pump and cables with the cable retainer.

If you need more definitive information on the 1957 Corvette wiper motor and foot pump functionality, you can always contact Tom or Jay Maxwell who have rebuilt hundreds of the 1957 Corvette wiper motors.

            Gary,

Thanks for info, since 88 was a passenger car motor it certainly increases the possibility that it got on my car thru a stock shortage substitution situation. which was common in those days. I'll check with the Maxwells for the functional difference between the 88 and 91 to resolve my operational questions.

              Gary,

Do you have contact info for the Maxwells ? I couldn't find them in Driveline.
