New to this forum. 62 exhaust question.

The judging manual says the 300 HP has a crossover pipe. I have had my car since 1965 and I don't recall it having the crossover. The folks at Paragon think that it shouldn't. I asked this question on another forum and didn't get a definitive answer. What do you folks think is correct?

Welcome aboard Jim. I guess it depends on your definition of correct. Did it come that way from the factory? I personally don't know, but what I do know is if the Judging Manual says it did then that's how your car will be judged. The manuals have been wrong in the past and every effort to correct them is usually done so. But until proven wrong it is the guideline we use to judge the car. I know this doesn't really answer your question, but you have to understand that facts and records of how the cars were built were not kept like they are today.. Mid year changes were not uncommon back then.

AIM section 396/583 sheet 2.00 reflects exactly what we have seen on original cars: 3798803 pipe asm - exhaust l.h, 3798804 r.h. In other words, 300 and 340 hp cars (as well as 360) had crossover pipes. (2 1/2" exhaust manifolds). There are two potential scenarios: 1) your car was done wrong at the factory. Not likely, since all the 2 1/2 exhaust pipes would have had stubs for the crossovers or 2) it was modified prior to 1965. Based on 39 years of experience with 62's, I'd vote for (2).

In 1963, powerglide 300 HP cars came with the 2" exhaust manifolds, NOT 2 1/2". I knew that Mike E. had found original owners of 300HP crossover cars - just didn't know if there was a "PG Variation".

It may have the crossover and I just don't remember. It does have the 2 1/2" manifolds and is a 4 speed. I'm pretty sure nothing had been done to the car as it only had 11,000 miles on it when I bought it.

I have decided to install the system with the crossover.

              Thanks for your input,
              Jim

                Jim,
I noticed that you have the last 62 made. I'd love to compare component dates with you--I have the second-last (#14530)

                  Mike,
I would be happy to. I don't have the original engine (got used up in an old race car in the 70's), but I do have the original generator, exhaust manifolds, transmission, bell housing, rear end, radio, etc.

The engine in it is restoration correct (gasp) and I have re-stamped it (double gasp). The block date is 6/12/62 and the pad is stamped FO7IIRD.
I am located north of Seattle. I bought the car in March of 1965 from a Chevy dealer in New Orleans for $2150.00. I was 18.

                  Jim
