    1978 Pace Car Decals

I am looking for some guidance. I just bought a 1978 pace car that does not have the decals. I am trying to decide if I try and find original ones or buy the reproductions. I am afraid that the original ones might be to brittle to apply. How bad will I get dinged from a points perspective if I don't buy original?

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

    Jason,

There is only about a ten point deduction 'if the decals are applied, or if the decals are missing'. If the decals are present but are reproductions then the deduction should be less than ten points.

Thanks! Any thought on trying to go with originals vs reproductions?

Forget originals. They will be very brittle. The quality was not good when new

Arland and Dick are offering two contrasting considerations and both are valid. If you plan to apply to the vehicle, than indeed old ones are thirty-five years old and brittle in contrast to the materials used today that offer considerable flexibility, wear and sun UV tolerance. In contrast, if your objective is to have a set for judging purposes and they sit in the box in the rear storage area, than dated decals will work fine. If applied, its a ten point deduction since the decals were delivered to the dealer in the box.

Having said all that, this link is to an article published in the Corvette Restorer on Pace Car Decals.

For judging its nice to have an original set in the original box. The guidance give direction whether the decals or there or not and no reference to the box type. But, as this article points out, the box had a specific part number when shipped from the factory. Often we find a correct set of decals but in service replacement boxes.

            Hope this helps!
